The engine should be fully warmed up in about five minutes worth of driving. Fifteen minutes is not normal.

Is this an OEM thermostat from Mazda?

I usually let the car idle for about three minutes and then take off. Once I start driving (keeping revs below 3k until fully warmed) it warms up pretty quick. I'm probably at normal operating temp within 3-4 miles.

If I let the car idle until warm it takes a little longer, but not much. It idling at 2-2.5k instead of 1.5k when cold probably speeds things up a little. Going to try to figure that one out soon.

No wonder it takes so long to warm up. Just start it and drive it. Keep the load and revs low until it's warm. Long warm-up times just waste gas.

thermastat is from cragens.
Get a Mazda one.

My situation. I can't keep it hot.

New OEM thermostat.

New Mazda race pump.

E-fan run on switch.

Idle till 1/4 up.

Drive 40 minutes to work, engine becomes cold and thermo shuts.

Crazy..the engine only and only goes to normal temps, while sitting still.

ha yea i never thought rammed air would make any car run like crap, because i heard rotarys have a optimal temputre the run at so the oil seals and etc expand and seat right. any ways yea....

i always let my car warm up for atleast 10 minutes, it gets below 5 degrees round here so i dont take any chances. I NEVER drive away until it settles at round 750-900 rpm's. just bein on the safe side..

As long as you don't go red lining it when you start her up, you shouldn't have too much of an issue with driving it when you start it. We had a much similar thread on this type of discussion earlier, and it was the main consensus that letting it warm up for a period of time is just wasting gas.

But hey, to each their own. It just seems unnatural to drive a car when it's freezing cold :p

Sounds like the thermostat must be stuck open.

Start the car cold and put your hand on the upper rad hose. The hose should remain cold until the thermostat opens up. If it gradually gets warmer as the car does, the thermostat is stuck open. You can also try putting your hand on the rad, though it may burn you.

Also, fix that e-fan:

Stupid people tend to say stupid things.

That's a ridiculous waste of time and gas. It's completely unnecessary. Just start the car, put on your seatbelt and drive away. Don't beat on the engine until it's reached operating temperature.

Honestly, I am amazed that these "warmup people" actually have 10 minutes to sit around and wait for their cars to warm up. :P

If the proper oil for the climate is in the car, there is no need to wait for the car to warm up more than 1 minute.

In fact idling, waiting for the car to come up to temp is the surest way to waste gas and pollute the environment. As the emissions system takes much much longer to warm if the car is not moving and the engine tends to run very rich until the emissions system is up to temp.

I'd really suggest getting a Mazda thermostat. They've been proven by quite a few people to be more reliable. My car hits full coolant temp within 3-5 minutes. I let it idle for about 30 seconds, and then I drive it in low load, low RPM conditions. Then I keep being easy on it for another 10 minutes, just in case. Then I redline it constantly.
