What does it do when you do try to start it before the 20 mins? I'm assuming it's cranking.

Minor flooding that would evaporate in 20 min.? Try putting the throttle all the way to the floor next time and see what happens.

Putting the pedal to the floor in '86-'88 cars has no effect. Unlike the 89+ cars, the '86-'88 ECU does not have a built in unflooding program.

Do a search for "flooding" to find possible causes and solutions. It is a VERY common problem.

Just a question about flooding, figured I would post it here seeing as how we're sort of on the subject. Would having leaky injectors cause terrible gas mileage while driving or would it just cause flooding when you shut the car off? And if it does contribute to crappy gas mileage while driving, how much HP do you lose from having too much gas going in? My car is running pig rich right now and sort of flooding itself a bit sometimes, I am gonna replace O2 sensor once I get insurance again, but wanted to know how much of a problem my injectors are being as well. Thanks.

Leaky injectors would caue poor mileage, flooding and power loss. "Pig rich" is VERY rich, and will probably result in -25HP or so...probably more, though it is hard to say because it will also depend on engine condition. Note that too much fuel will artificially lower compression.

Awesome, thanks for your reply. I am running pig rich, well more like FAMILY of pigs rich!! On a FULL tank in my 1990NA I get about 215-240KM (about 140-150miles I think). It sucks, especially with gas prices the way they are. And I am also experiencing major HP loss, mostly top end, but bottom end is sorta poor too....anyways....sounds like I am gonna get those fixed ASAP once car is back on road. Thanks again for info.
