Car "shutters" on takeoff

OK guys. I need a little expert advise here. My 86' N/A RX-7 will shake or shutter a little (sometimes) when taking off from a standing start. Could this be the clutch? What's really throwing me is that it only does it when I'm taking it easy. If I get a little aggressive while taking off (about 2500-3000 rpm) it goes really smooth. If I really get on it (3500-4500) it's still really smooth with not even a trace of (clutch) slipping just lots of tire spinning (it will break them loose easily shifting into second with a little encouragement). Why would it do this (shake) when barely giving it any gas to get it going? Also, it doesn't shake all the time when starting off slowly, just sometimes. Any suggestions or past experience would be helpful......
This might be helpful. Go to the http://www.mazdatrix.com site and go to section H.Click on 86-92 suspension and parts and then look at Strut Tower and Eng Torque Brace.... there is a narritive about shuddering. Not what you asked but seems similar.

Thanks! I had been to that site, but had not looked in that section. It seems like my problem could be solved by adding the Strut/Firewall brace W/engine torq brace. A mere $325.00.......Oh well, no one ever said that owning an RX-7 would be cheap. Since my problem is related to slow take off shudders and not hard launches, I'll bet this would help. Although the more I think about it............I'll bet I have some worn motor and/or tranny mounts or I wouldn't need the other braces to begin with. Hmmmm....Maybe I should check those mounts!

Bad engine mounts might indeed be your problem.
I had that problem myself. But it went away when I pulled my clutch flywheel and had it turned and trued at my local machine shop. Anyplace that turns rotors should be able to do it for you also.
Anyway, no problem since. You might simply have hard spots resulting from heat spots on the disc face.

The flywheel being out of round or having "hot" spots would definetly cause a car to "shudder", but it would also shudder at high RPM launches as well as low ones. My car doesn't do this at quicker takeoffs, so I don't think it could be that. Thanks for the comment! If all else fails thats something that I will have to get checked out.

I once had a coolant leak from the small coolant line that goes from the engine to the throttle body. This leaked a little bit of water into the bellhousing and caused my clutch to do exactly what you are describing. You might double check for that.

Dude! You know what? About a week or so ago, I did have a small coolant hose leaking right over the bellhousing! I fixed the leak and slowly the anti-freeze smell is going away, but it is still shuddering on slow takeoffs. How long should it take for it to burn the anti-freeze off of the clutch? The car never did this before the leak started. Can I do anything to help speed up the process??
You know what?I may have spilled coolant down there when I was replacing fuel lines and replacing the intake manifold gasket. If it has gone away, it took at least a month. The reason I say "If" is that t has been really hot where I live, and my car only seems o do it when it's cold.I wonder if that is what caused it.Interesting.
