Car shuts off at idle

Hey guys, so I just picked an 87 gxl that has been parked for about 2 years. Anyways as I was driving it home the car is running great and smooth. But as soon as I hit a hit a stop light and let the car idle, the motor just stopped. Tried starting it but was not working. Tried pulling the fuse and it also has a fuel cut off switch. But if I let it cool down it would start up.
Also if the car is at running temp and I shut the car off with the fuel cut off switch the car starts right up no problem even when it's warm. What do you think is wrong? Could it be the old gas in there? Or a stuck open injector and flooding my car at idle? Sorry for the long post. I hope you guys can help.

does it stall when you come to a stop when the car is Cold?(not up to temp?).sounds like a water temp sensor is not working right(it is in the rear of the waterpump housing, sort of hidden by the alternator,it is green)

it doesn't stop when its cold, only at running temp. I could drive the car for a while but I would have to rev up the motor when coming to a stop so it doesn't stall on me.

yeah i'm going to be replacing the fuel filter, o2 sensor and temp sensor soon. hopefully that fixes it.

I had an issue of starting fine and driving, but when I shut off it would not start again. Once it sat overnight it would start again. Turned out to be rust in the tank. It would settle and starting was ok, but once it got stirred up it prevented flow. Turned out the car had sit for years before I bought it. Tank was loaded with rust. Changed the tank and no more troubles.

It probably wouldn't hurt changing all the fluids out, if you haven't already. If the car's been sitting for two years, chances are the fluids are pretty much no good. Flush and drain the coolant, change oil and try to burn up or get rid of the old fuel. It'll probably help you out in the long run.

A compression test wouldn't hurt and checking the injectors is a good idea.

Try this out. Lots of good information on his website regarding rotarys and FC's specifically. Hopefully your problem will be fixed one way or the other.

1. Does it have a aftermarket alternator pully.
2. Have you had the alternator and battery tested

If the alternator isnt able to provide the juice needed to run it at idle itl stall. I'm having this issue atm, but thats due to previous owner screwing up the alternator wiring.

ok update!

I was able to use all the old shitty gas in the tank and filled up with gas. I was able to drive the car around town normally and turn it off and start it up when its at normal operating temp.
I took the car out and drove it a little bit harder than I normally do, turned the car off and car wouldn't start back up again until it cooled down.

^ alternator is stock, and charge on the battery is always at 12v or a bit higher.

what should I do next? I'm really hoping I wont have to tear through the engine to get them injectors out lol. If I had a garage it would be a different story tho.

always start with the basics. set the tps. replace the plugs, fluids ect.

as for the hot starting problem make sure the wiring is good from the computer to the coolent temp sensor. you need to make sure you replaced the right sensor and the computer is seeing the right resistance from it.

is there a write up anywhere on how to check the wiring for the coolant temp sensor? I replaced the temp sensor behind the water pump.
