car idle surge, and dies at 4k

hello all,
i am working on my friends FC (87 non turbo) and for some reason it idle surges between 450 and 1k rpm then once driving if you try to take it past 4k it just dies, but starts right back up?
i have no idea what's going on so i thought i would check with you guys and see if anyone has had this problem or similar problem.
thanks
Jessie

Try fully warming the engine up and measuring the voltage on the Green/Red wire found at the three wire TPS plug. It should read 1 volt w/key to on and the engine "completely" warmed up.

It's likely out of spec so to adjust the voltage reading there is a screw encased in a spring about one inch in length that is part of the TPS throttle linkage.

i checked the tps and it was bad so we changed that out then it was still dying at 4k so we had the fuel pump tested and it was "going bad".
needless to say problem solved now. thanks for the help\
