car dies when put into drive/reverse
a buddy of mine and me are trying to figure out this problem with his S5 auto Gtu.. the things hes looked over already are the vacuum system and the fuel system. he thinks the TPS is off. It starts, it idles, it rev's (a little slower than normal), but as soon as I put it in drive or reverse it stalls out. the car did sit in a heated garage for a few years, so there could be other issues. i also havent had a chance to get out there and help check the compression... im sure theres people who have had this issue... any ideas b4 i consult my fsm?
im not realy sure i was ready for my auto to die just waiting on 5spd swap so i wasn't worried about what killed it just about replacing it with 5spd. i highly recomend your buddy do a 5spd swap you can get better MPG then an auto or you can have tons of fun.

could be the lock-up solenoid in the torque converter, it's used for cruising to take out the ~10% slip in a torque converter, applies it straight engine - transmission. If it starts failing, it'll won't allow the converter to "stall" (disengage) which causes your engine to stall. If you can get it into gear a bit at a time to get the car rolling, and then leave it in gear, does it drive fine, unless coming to a stop?

that im not sure about, since the car isnt mine and isnt in the area. the owner and i are trying to figure out some time where we can get together and work on this... that is why im trying to figure out some "could be" problems b4 we get together. but i will give this a shot when we do.

even if you push him in neutral to a few mph and click it into drive to see if it'll catch. I'd bet that that's the problem. Only thing is, if that is the problem, you'd need to change the torque converter, requiring you to remove the transmission. At that point, unless he's dead set on an automatic, it'd almost be nice to switch out to manual, if he cares to do all the labour.
