car dies when pressing throttle
car dies when pressing throttle
i'm having some wierd problem. all of a sudden when i press the throttle even a little it kills the car as if it chokes it off of something. then it went away and worked but it nearly kills it then revs up weirdly. can it be the TPS? maybe Fuel Pump? maybe clogged injectors?? its a 91 NA
my tps is the original so perhaps it has finally called it quits after 22 years of service. something is telling me the afm messed up though perhaps not getting any air when i press the throttle pedal or the throttle on the TB itself. though it does idle fine on its own it only happens when i press the gas pedal or flip the throttle on the TB so im not sure what the problem is. im about to get my car painted in 2 weeks finally and this crap happens
ill probably get a new TPS

bump any help please. i drove home perfectly fine a (30 minute drive home) and when i stopped in neutral in my alley to open my gate i got back in the car and pushed the throttle normally and instead of revving it just choked out the engine it did this the 4 times i tried it. i sat in the alley for a few minutes and tried again this time it didn't choke out but it started revving up as if i was pressing the throttle on a beat even though i had the pedal on the floor.

Quite often this problem is caused by the TPS. If it's intermittent, first check the TPS connector to make sure it is fully plugged in and the contacts are not corroded. If it looks physically OK and cleaning the contacts doesn't fix the issue, replace the TPS.
Edit..The reason is because the TPS is used to determine how much fuel enrichment the software "accel pump" adds when the throttle is stabbed.

ill try it out once im home from work now im stuck with the spare civic
. the tps has been a little weird since i got the car perhaps its that. testing shall come.

ok i unplugged the tps turned it on and it revved by itself uncontrolled to around 4000 and immedieatly back down to 0 and stalled. it only revs to around 4k and donw to 0 with the TPS unplugged. i plugged it back in and when i press the throttle pedal it when low near 0 but then pulsed up again as it did before but it didnt stall. so im going to assume the TPS is the culprit
heres a couple of videos of what happens if it helps(yes i know my stupid power steering belt or pulley is squeaking)
its been sitting for 3 days since it started happening and now it didnt even want to stay on till the 3rd or 4th crank then it idles fine. when i have the pedal to the floor you can see what i was talking about how it revs up like a pulse.

this video is showing how if i flip the throttle and it just chokes out. i didn't let it stall but if i kept on it it will

ok it looks like when i press the gas pedal slowly as if i were just taking off from first gear it revs up fine but the more gas i put the more erratic it climbs until it passes 5k and then it revs up at full throttle like normal. it seems to only pulsate when im putting medium throttle at any rpm or go wide open from idle
ok i unplugged the tps to test it and it revved up perfectly. of course it would stall if you let off the gas and it reached zero since the tps was unplugged and can't keep an idle. i plugged the tps in again and all the problems appeared again. now im 90% sure the TPS was the problem. im awaiting a tps from a forum member and will buy a brand new one after my car gets painted next week. im trying to make my paintjob deadline of thursday the 11th which is why i decided on a used tps for 50$ instead of the brand new ones that are 600$ since i have limited funds to spare right now because of said paintjob.
