MA Car almost turns over....

Hey I'm new to the Rx-7 club(as you can see) and i have a few questions about my new 87 Rx-7. OK, I just bought the car and it almost turns over; I'm not good with motors but i was told i would have help from my friend to get her fired up! That hasn't happened so it looks like I'm about to do it myself. First off i know that she has been sitting a few months sense the last time she ran, the secondary injectors are leaking but with 129,000 miles, is there going to be anything else I should be expecting/should replace? Any tips/hints/advice would be greatly appreciated.

Well you really awnsered your own question when you said the secondary injectors are leaking.

I am 99% sure you are flooded. RX7's and well known for there flooding, they are a pain to get unflooded somtimes.

I had BAD flooding, to get it started you need to do this:

1: make sure your battery is fully charged AND (important) hook up jumper cables to another car.

2: Pull the EFI fuse under the hood, the one closest to the engine.

3: pull are 4 spark plugs but be sure to keep the bottom and top seprate, they are differnt.

4: clean all the plugs with brake cleaner and a wire brush

5: crank the engine over for about 10 - 20 seconds with the gas to the floor, it won't start obiously, and you should smell gas in the engine bay

6: put about a 1 oz of motor oil in both of the bottom plug holes.

7: reinstall all plugs and make sure the plug wires are the same way they were taken off. Blue goes to top and black to bottom.

8: Now, try cranking it for about 5 - 10 seconds and see what happens. If it sounds like it is getting close, then push the gas to the floor and crank for 10 seconds, let sit for 10 and repete a few times.

9: if it still won't start then let it sit and the starter cool down

10: if you just can't get it started after doing the above, then up under the dash is a black and yellow relay that controls the fuel pump, it is by the drivers right knee when you sit down under the dash. Pull that off and that should stop the fuel pump from running. Crank it then with the gas tot he floor until something happens, just make sure you don't burn up the starter. When/if it catches and starts for a second plug the relay back in and try starting it again. should fire right up.




NOW, if flooding is not the problem then you can test that by taking the intake off and spraying carb cleaner into the intake while trying to start the car. If it starts then you have a fuel problem.

Thanks, ill be sure to try it. What do you recommend i do to prolong the life of the motor?

do a complete rebuild and replace seals, gaskets, everything. that will prolong the life

Well that will work^^ but is impratical.

Really, FULL tune-up, Plugs, plug wires, ALL fluids, oil, diff, tranny, all hoses and belts, flush radator, fuel filter, and all that good stuff.

yeah. Best way to unflood a car is to unplug the fuel pump, and crank the engine over for a couple seconds at a time for a minute or so with all 4 spark plugs removed. Hold the gas pedal all the way down while cranking. You will literally see the flooded gasoline flying out of the plug holes. I have used this method for a couple extreme flooding situations involving a set of seriously leaky injectors that I replaced.

Make sure the CAS is installed properly...

While the plugs are out clean them with a wire brush on your power drill or dremel.

One last question, Whats a good site to buy seals from and would you recommend if i did them myself or should i bring it to a shop? In Mass its kind of hard to find people that know about rotary engines so iv heard.

Seeing as you have no idea what you are geting into, let me tell you that you are looking at $1000 - $3000 worth of work at a shop. Or a LOT of time and still close to $1000 if you do it yourself.

If the engine runs and gets desent compression then you should not need that.

You can buy a turbo swap for $1000. Don't bother rebuilding an NA motor unless your porting it.

Get going on replacing those injectors and than come to some Massachusett's meets! There is a whole thread dedicated to them in the Northeast forum!
