Capping vacuum ports

How is everyone filling/capping their vacuum ports on the UIM? I'm loosing the rubber caps you buy at any parts store. They last a month or two and start falling apart or they become soft from emissions and fall off. I've been told to order caps from mcmaster.com because they last a little longer, but those ones will have a longer life, but will still fail eventually too.

Aside from JB Weld which I don't want to use because I like to leave the option of using the port again if needed. What about filling a cap with RTV and then putting it on the port?

You got the right idea Jeff.
I use "the right stuff" (rtv **** by Permatex).
I goop a bit into the Nipple and the Cap and "spluck"!,Put the vacuum cap on.
YOU can get it off later, but under ordinary wear and tear that thing will not fall off or leak.Any Rtv that is in the nipple can be poked out later on if you decide to use that orifice.

Like Frank's hot sauce "I use that **** fir everything!"

+1, I've done the same and they've held up well

The other option if you don't plan on removing them ever is to use the JB stick weld under the caps as well. THAT holds up forever.

I used to have problems with my nipples cracking. I found some silicone ones online and haven't had a problem with them. I always put a ziptie too. Even though the smaller ones don't have lips the extra friction seems to help keep them on.

So you mean just spluck it on the nipple and poke out the orifice?

Why not pull the steel nipple out then tap for M4 (or similar), then install a plug? Fairly easy and will have a clean result. Make a plug by cutting down some threaded rod then Dremeling a slot in it so that it can be threaded in with a flat blade screwdriver after a little sealant is applied.

If you have access to a TIG welder, weld over them. That's what I did with all the extra ports on the FD upper intake on my Cosmo.

You should use moisturizer or stay out of the sun.

i used the rtv also and it seams to hold up well. the caps will still crack a deteriorate like before but the rtv keeps it sealed. so still need to replace caps but this way it can be done at your convenience

Read the OP, I do not want to make permanent changes in case I ever want to use those later.

I'll be doing RTV with the caps, maybe looking for some silicone caps also.
