cant find performance parts...

I cant find very many performance parts for my 89 convertible...are any of the engine/mechanical parts different for a convertible than the other models?? cuz some of the body parts are different, like the tail lights...so I was just wondering if all of the 2nd gen. engine mods would fit my car or not...its a 13B NA...I want to find a 13BT but havent yet... and how hard would it be to find a 20BT do you think?? I would love one...but just give me advice mostly on the engine mods, cuz I want a drag/drift car...thanks everyone...

The easy response:

You have a Non Turbo RX-7. There's not a whole lot of mods you can do to the car besides the following without ALOT of time/money (Even the basics can cost quite a bit...):
Aftermarket Intake, Exaust, Suspension.

The harder stuff would be engine porting when the motor needs a rebuild. Or adding a turbo to your N/A car. Just dropping in the Turbo II motor wont work, you need to swap out alot of stuff. A couple things off the top of my head, ECU (You might not need this one having a convertable... Their ECU's were sometimes the same as the Turbo II one.), change around the wiring harness. MAF and Tranny. (You dont HAVE, to swap the tranny but its recommended.) Anyways, needless to say you are in for a whole lot of work if you want to swap anything into it. There is now a super charger kit out I think it goes for around 2k... but I dont have much info on that. There are also people who have put a M90 Supercharger from a Ford Thunderbird (I think) onto the car using a custom bracket and pully... Again alot of custom work and effort... so beware its definately not 'bolt on' There are a couple small Throttle Body mods that can be done as well, a bit better on the response time never hurts anyone...

The 20B engine will take even more time and money. Without alot of 'hookups' price wise you are looking at over 10k for this project. Alot of custom stuff will need to be made to make it work as well. Its not very practical for most people.

I would honestly say if you are looking for quite a bit more power and are not happy with just intake and exaust then sell your car and buy a Turbo II. Unfortunately for you having a convertable is nice.. but it is also heavier then the rest of the RX's mostly. I think because of chassy adjustments needed to support the convertable aspects frame wise. At least with the Turbo II model as a base you open your options up a bit more.. (Bigger fuel pump, Adjustable fuel pressure regulator, bigger injectors and bigger turbo. (Please do it in that order too. ) ) Just a couple things... It all depends how much time and money you have to dump on the project. Also is the car a daily driver or do you have another car to get you around while you modify your 'drag/drift' car?

Eh, thats the way I see it.

I've been noticing headers that say "will not fit convertible"
why is that? is there some suspension bracing in the way?

To answer. All parts that are for an N/A will fit your motor The manufacturer will state (as you noted) if there is a Vert problem. You'll run into problems with Suspension parts but most parts are available. The thing I had problems with (and I have the same car as you) was teh front brake pads. Even though I don't have the a sport tuned suspension (the adjustable one) I had to buy the brake pads for it. (Kragen listing). So far that is all.
