OH can you run power steering without the ecu?

so i just put my power steering back on and in the process of installing my megasquirt i trimmed off and re used some of the connectors that i thought i wouldn't need, the power steering connectors were two of them. so I tried running without anything connected and all seemed fine but now it sounds like my pump is bad. Im just wondering, do I need to wire the power steering computer back in? or did my pump just go bad on its own because when it first started it seemed like there wasn't as much assist as there should have been.

I've been running my p/s with my megasquirt for a long time and have no issues. but I still run the power harness on that side of the engine... (just spliced into the coil wires). The P/S is still plugged in... and I'm pretty sure there is some sort of power steering controller that it's plugged into...

2 things here.

the PS is hooked to the Engine ECU just to compensate the Car from dying when the load is put on it when turning. That is pretty well why they cut that wire on an S4 N/A to TII Harness(also because that same wire would be a boost sensor wire on a TII harness).
So in that aspect it is NOT required.Since you got Megasquirt you don't need rpm compensation from the MS.

Another thing that I can think of is that the PS ECU is for sensing speed or RPM.
it will vary the feel of the PS so you don't have a Super soft wheel at high speed, but not a Hard feel at idle.

NOW,I have been researching some alternative PS systems and I am trying to get parts together for a Toyota MR2 Hydro-electric pump.Runs off of 12 volts and NO pulley.
Looking at the material from people who have done this, some do not use a sensor and find it LIGHT at higher speeds.I think that may be your Only drawback if you do not have YOUR setup hooked up.

BUT,if your pump is whining right now,I would get that looked at.Check the fluid, level, seals, belt tension, etc.

the PS wire to the ecu is an INPUT, so the ecu sees you turned the wheel, so it can turn on the air supply valve.

OK, now I have another question. I have been looking at replacement pumps and i have found some on eBay that look like mine with 2 different plugs involved, but then i see some that are "RPM sensing"and they only have the 2 wire plug on them. would it be better for me to run the different pump or should i stick with the same one that i have??

you know how many board members probably have pumps sitting in their scrap pile they would probably give you for cost of shipping?

I'm still using my power steering, going to once I get it all put back together.

I had it off on my NA, but I see it as a good thing to have, but I have no problem without its just more.difficult to.turn.from a stop or.to.turn fast

exactly, though it can be done without you're probably just making things harder than they need to be, its all in preference
