Couple questions .. How necisary are the turbo head sheilds? If I cut these fuggers out is that gonna be a big deal later? Damn turbo is so close to the rubber motor mounts though it seems.
also, is the oil feed line above gravity level of the oil? or do i need to drain the oil?
thx.

I have run without my heatshields for a year. I wrapped any wires I had in the area. Yeah, the heatshields are there for a reason but it's not an absolute must. I'd try and stick back on the shield between the intake and the turbo though.
You might get a couple of drops of oil, but no need to drain it you'll be fine.

When i took my stock turbo out of my TII i went through the top. It seemed to me that there was a hell of a lot more room going up from the top then going down. I had to drain my coolant and take off that large lower radiator house to do it but it made it a lot esier.
I also do not have an air pump which helps. I would think judging from what room there is that you should go from the top but you must seperate the turbo from its manifold first.
Just my experience.

I agree there is more room going out the top, but I do have the smog pump installed, all my IC piping, my BOV, my TID, etc .. etc .. there is just some much more **** I will have to remove going out the top. I am trying to do this as easily as possible. As far as I can tell I 'might' have to take off the pasenger side motor mount to get it out the bottom, otherwise it looks like it should fit fine. To me it's alot easier to pull that then it is to pull all the other crap on top.
I got the DP off, the oil lines, and the lower heat shield so far .. I should know tonight, or tommorow if it's gonna make it through or not.

Top.
I would recommend going through the top. You'll have to remove your acv etc as well as heat shields, possibly the air pump but it's not that difficult to do all that. I have gotten to the point where I can remove the turbo in about 30 minutes (if that), however I'm running with no emissions and everything is blocked off. Good luck.

When we swapped my turbo motor into the GTUs, we left the turbo heatshields on, but did away with the downpipe heatshields. I don't have ABS, but even with ABS, it's a helluva lot easier to remove the downpipe this way. And there are no ill affect eithers. You can at least get rid of that heat shield for sure.
