Ok, this may sound like a dumb question, but here is why I ask. I'm looking to buy a RX-7 and I'm primarily focusing on a NA. The reason is that I don't have the money for a good turbo car and I won't have any time or money to be wrenching on it for about a year, so getting one with a blown motor or that needs work is not an option.

If I can find one for cheap with a blown turbo, I'd be fine with driving it for about a year and then fixing the turbo. Would you just have to hold the wastegate open or would it require other more severe methods?

From your statement, it looks like you know absolutely nothing about turbos. No you can not simply hold the wastegate door open(how the hell would you boost?)

Turbo's are not that expensive used. Buy one and a haynes manual and it will tell you all you need to know. I spent a total of $300 on a Series 5('89-'91) FC turbine/manifold for my series 4 ('86-'88) FC. If I had NOT turned up the boost, I would have had a turbine that lasted longer than 2 years.

I worded my orig post kind of weird. I meant to say that I would not be able to work on it (ie rebuild, replace turbo, etc) until about a year from now.

I think you missed my point. I don't want boost. I'm wondering if I can drive the car if the turbo is bad and put off fixing it for a while. I'm really just trying to figure out if I find a cheap turboII with a blown turbo whether or not I'd consider buying it.

I drove my old Talon TSi with a siezed turbo for about 4 months last winter, didn't have any problems except slow *** accelleration heh.

You'll probably find one with a blown motor before you find one with a blown turbo.

Just get one that works, if you are like 300$ short just go find 6000 cans and get the 5 cent refund. There is always a way to get more money if you really want it

No, you can't drive it with a blown turbo, that could cause a serious problem....don't do it.

If you don't have the money for a turbo. I wouldn't buy one then. Either save for a turbo (prefrebably one thats not blown) or buy an N/A. The N/A is a fun car, pretty quick, however, much like myself you will eventually want one.
Buying a car with a blown engine is not always bad, but make sure you have the money for everything. Things like that always run over budget.
I say save longer for a turbo. Or be happy with an N/A and someday get a turbo.

Yeah, I figured I probably shouldn't drive with a busted turbo. So, I guess I'll keep my search to good running cars.

I actually had a '88 AE which I bought when I was 20 and sold when I was 25, so I already know what the turbo feels like. So, I'm not 100% sure that I am willing to live with a NA, but I do have 2 other high HP cars so I think I would enjoy a free-reving light car.

I'm really just starting the search for my car, so I'm not sure where this trek will lead me.

No you cannt....a blown turbo/manifold/wastegate does not produce ANY power, and if you press the engine, it only produces noise (and a lot of it too ) I know, I'm talking from experience
