PA Can a Walbro start go bad before actually dying?

Im having a nasty fuel related issue, and its basically boiling down to the engine not getting enough fuel.

Ive narrowed it down to either the filter being clogged or the pump isnt working properly. Is it possible that the pump is about to die? and performance is deteriorating, or should have just died.

The car was fine saturday, drove to a friends and stayed the night there. Went to leave sunday afternoon and the car would barely move under its own power...

Yeah my walbro did the same thing. The stock pump had rusted out and the rust in the tank ruined the walbro.

I just had this happen to me as well.

The rust in the tank TOTALLY clogged the pump sock and ruined the pump it's self.

With my car the performance slowly dropped from being able to go to redline to 6k - 5k - 4k ect until it would barely run.

tried everything else and then looked at the fuel pump, sure enough, that was the problem. Mine was so bad i had to swap the gas tank with my parts car.

Hmm, interesting. The only thing that really confuses me is how it was completely fine on Saturday, then complete **** on Sunday.

It happened to me but I had bought one of the 69.99 pumps on ebay supposed to be a walbro racing pump. Ended up getting one that has a warrenty with it since this one slowly loses pressure till it cannot go above 3500 rpms.

Well that is more or less what happend to me. I was driving it one day and it was fine, though i thought it was a little rough in the top end it still ran fine.

Then the next day it would not go past 6k then it just dropped like a rock until within 1 day of just idling and maybe half dozen miles of test driving it was barely running.

Here is what a brand new pump looked like after less than a week in the car:

I could also hear it outside the car over my leaking exahust.

Holy crap! Well, ive always heard it whining, but I figured that was the nature of it. I noticed it wasnt as loud last night when I was poking around. Im gonna do the filter tonight and pull the assembly to see if there's any visual hints of failure.

possible options

yes thats called lake bottom...over time moisture builds in you tank and generates a large amount of rust specially if your always running a 1/4 tank or less of fuel..it happend to us 3 times before we finally had to get a new tank we were going to clean it out but it was very bad....after new tank we never seen the problem again...

Well, I talked to a local import shop near me. They guy there things the pump was over heating and once it cooled down, something inside seized up. Says he's seen it happen a few times. Probably gonna grab the pump tonight and try and swap it in and see what happens./

Replaced the pump and car is fine now. Peeking inside the tank, I was very suprised how clean it looked. Only one patch of dirt/rust/whatever.

Remember Walbros tend to run hot and can cook themselves if you are running around on less than 1/4 tank.

Probably what it was, I always go down to about a little less than a quarter tank before fills. I usually end up putting in 14gal or so.
