the most noticeable difference is the 4 pot brakes and the much beefier suspension on the GTU.

^ What he said. Also, the SE has 4-lug hubs, and I believe the GTU has the 5-lug hubs (and better brakes, better suspension, etc).

What's the use going to be? For a daily driver, the SE is just fine. If you're going to be doing heavy track stuff, the GTU would be a better option. The single piston front brakes aren't bad (and certainly are better than what a lot of cars come with), but the 4-piston calipers on the GTU (and larger brake rotor IIRC) will be better for sustained hard braking.

Having been on dialup, I feel for you. The FAQ really is useless on a dialup connection. Someone really should make a text version of it. Maybe if I get bored here in the next few weeks and run out of stuff to do on my car.

OK,
I've owned both.

The SE is the base model for the 87/88 years I believe.

It is single piston brakes all around.
NO LSD
NA suspension/sway bars
usually flat like seats.

S4 GTU(the real GTU)
It's a Turbo II but without the turbo.
It has 4 piston brakes
Beefy sway bars and suspension
LSD NA rearend
Bucket style seats(holds me in damn good)

No luxury stuff like the GXL

It's pretty much a light weight Turbo model.
My GTU has manual windows,sunroof,cruise,ps,ac,etc..

hey, there aren't 4 piston breaks on the GTU. I own a 90 GTU and I have 4 wheel disc breaks with single claiper with 5 lug hub. I like it a lot, the car is perfect for drifting stock. I'm not into all that other stuff like drag racing or track racing. I just like to drift.

edit:Sorry, I have S5 GTU.

Didn't the GTU turn into the base/SE in S5's?

s5 gtu do not come with 4piston front brakes, it was the base model in 89 my 90 gtu doesnt have them either but my 91 coupe does b/c it had the sport suspension option. the 87/88 GTU did have them b/c it was the sport model, which turned into the gtus in 89.

That's why I put
"S4 GTU(the real GTU)"

GTU in S5 is just a base model(renamed 5lug SE).

The GTUs is the revision/revival of the real GTU.
The only upgrade compared to the older GTU is the different ratio rearend.

Everybody drools over the GTUs because it's "rare"
