Probably simular to the people that call verts FC3S.. when they are really FC3C, and the VIN says FC35

The AE85 is equipped with a 3A-U motor not available in North America.

There aren't any AE85's here; they're all AE86's, regardless of motors.
Now I can't back that up, but if it is the case, then I suspect it was more a North American thing, that if you went to Toyota and pulled the model numbers rather than the VIN (which much like the FC are radically different) you would find the north american Corrolla GT-S is really the AE86 and the standard single cam is the AE85.
