Can a modded S5 n/a run lean?

Hey, I have an 89 GXL with a Bonez race pipe, RB catback and a cone filter.
Now when I'm daily driving I can hear some little pops coming from around the exhaust manifold. It only happens when I press the throttle at more than 30%. You guys think it could be detonation?
Also, in 3rd gear, when I get to around 5k RPMs the car takes forever to go higher. Too rich?

I'm trying to save money to go on a dyno to tune my S-AFC!

Thanks!

i really dont think you would run lean with those mods, i doubt its detonation.. try a tune up maybe that will smooth things out a bit...

I had the same problem. My car detonated like crazy after installing a cone filter and opening up the exhaust. I had to retard my timing. Check yours and see where it is. The other thing people are telling me is that I need a cold air box because now the hot engine compartment air is entering the cone filter. I can't believe this makes a big difference, but something in may car changed drastically when I did the same mods....

Oh yea, and if it sounds like popcorn popping rapidly or something similar (crackling) it is detonation. Fix it quick or you will ruin your engine. I think I fried one of my spark plugs already, gotta pull them this weekend........

Check to make sure your spark plug wires aren't crossed on the trailing plugs. Very common mistake that will cause the symptoms your described.
