can i tap front cover?

The oil return line from the turbo is stripped out on the front cover. I Don't want to buy an entire new front cover to fix the problem. Can I just tap the entire oil "hole" and put a barbed fitting in there, or can I drill and retap the bolt hole that is stripped?

never tried anything like this or worked on the front cover at all... but heres my advice. i'd say, depending on condition of the threads you could tap it. unless they are so worn you would need to go up 1 thread size. you could do that, but it would probibly be better to stick with oem sizes, IMO. Just keep in mind about the metal shavings falling into the engine and what not. And if you pull the front cover off, you have to be REAL careful with the thrust bearings & plates. www.mazdatrix.com has a thing about it in their faq section. If possible, post a pic of the thread condition, maybe someone who knows more about it than I do can help ya out. well, good luck man.

You might get by with flushing the oil, but I think would be easier, and safer, to drop the oil pan first.

On, the front cover where you put the pipe is studs. Why don't you just remove the stud and put a new one in?
