Can I run a 12.9 on stock ecu?
Can I run a 12.9 on stock ecu?
I guess this is my goal for my 89Turbo in my 86...All I need is a small garret compressor and tires. Full intake exaust and boost control with a S-AFC am I right???
its do-able, on an aftermarket turbo that is. the stock turbine just isnt efficient flowing the air required to make enough power to run 12s. the only person i know that went 12s on a stocker went 12.8 i think at 15-17 psi. the turbo didnt last too much longer after those runs. but anyway, with a bigger turbo and sufficient fuel, you should defineatley break into 12s.

Yes, quite easily actually. You can do it on the stock turbo and stock ECU. Your engine will be significantly happier with a larger compressor (lower IATs), and it will make more power as well.
-FMIC, ducted and sprayed (IAT <= 45 deg C)
-Water injection @ 11.5:1-11.8:1 A/F ratios
This will help you reliably run more boost. My advice is no more than 16 psi on 94 octane, and 20psi on 104 unleaded.
Here is a little story:
About a month ago, a friend of mine, Brian, set me up a race with a modded '99 lightning. He owns a chassis dyno, drives a TT mustang that traps 128, and has much drag racing experience. I beat the lightning while missing third pretty bad. Everyone was pretty impressed (people don't know rotaries at all around here), but you could tell Brian thought it might be a fluke somehow (he's a diehard Ford guy
).
The next day at the drags was an even faster '01 lightning (not sure on the mods). This time Brian wanted me to race the new lightning, but first wanted a ride in my car. Considering his collection of cars (including the TT), I was not expecting an animated response from him. I'll never forget the "stupid grin" on his face of "this is fast", when I got on boost. I asked him how it pulled, and did he think it had low 13's potential? He said, "It feels like a 12 second car when you get on it". As we pull back up, and the other lightning is staging, Brian says "Ok, let's show 'em" (or something to that affect), but I could hear the irony in his voice. To both our surprises I stayed even with him through 1st and 2nd, and by the end of third, and halfway through 4th (when the race ended), I pulled half a car.
For good measure, I did not brake very hard, and went through the coming turn at a fairly quick rate of speed. Not enough to squeel tires, but enough to get a "Are we going to make it!?" comment from Brian
. My calm response: "This is an RX-7, of course".
I was pretty happy with all of this, obviously, but I didn't quite understand how fast this was, until later on. Awhile later, I talked to Brian, and found out that the same lightning I raced went 12.50's @ 109 that weekend! I found out the the LS1 I raced, and only lost to by a fender (he got a huge jump from the go), dynoed 315rwhp/320rwtq. And I found out the 3rd gen I raced and pulled 2 cars on the top end, beat that same T/A
. It was then that I started realizing, that my car was pretty decent.
Here is the moral to this boring story: I was running 20 psi with a stock turbo, and in-sufficient fuel mods. I ran this for two days KNOWING full well the concequences. The engine blew of course, just as I was getting ready to port the wastegate, and upgrade fuel. I can say that I had fun with that engine while it lasted, and I am building another even crazier engine as we speak.
Fortunately, the people around here that have TIIs are listening to my advice on safety, so they can enjoy there engine for more than 500 miles
.

I like your NA. Its built for where its meant to be, the road course.
i wanted a fast RX-7. i didnt bother buying an N/A at all. i went straight for the T2. i am glad i did. my friend used to have a 90 GXL it had a few exhaust mods(no cats and a catback) and an intake. and it wasnt that fast. my T2 with the same stuff(no cats, catback, intake) is pretty quick, and will be faster soon enough.

Anyways, relavent mods were:
200 lbs reduced weight
17 lbs flywheel w/ 6-puck ACT
Stock turbo @ 20 psi
Full 3" exhaust dp/mp + gt spec catback
Straight TID + K&N
LOTS of misc bullshit to help the car run top notch

That's all the "go fast" related mods, I had.
