Can I remove this? Injector splashguard?

I've got my upper intake manifold here... Right where the injectors squirt is some sort of funny metal....splash guard or something. It's maybe 1.5" from the injector nozzle, supported by three metal edges. It has a bunch of crazy holes in it and ****. Is that really necessary?

It seems to me that the injectors THEMSELVES would have a nice spray to them.. Something like this would catch the spray, and maybe de-atomize it... I dunno...

This is what I'm talking about:

Kinda blury closeup:

Also... I haven't taken the primaries out yet.. Is there something like this on them?

Those are your diffusers and you NEED them. They help keep the air/fuel mixture, mixed together evenly, so you get a better combustion with each cycle.

How do you remove them?

How do you remove the defusers from the housing?

I just got a rebuilt engine(didn't come with the defusers) and it's going to take about 2 weeks to get them from Mazda, so I'd like to take the old ones out, I just can't figure out how to get the darn things out. I have new O-rings for them.... just need to remove them from the old engine.

Thanks!

hmmm...I didn't evenr realize they came out. If some of the little holes are plugged, just take a little pin to them. If the buildup stuff is caked in there, try spraying some degreaser on them and let it soak in, then try pushing a pin through the holes, thats what I had to do and it worked great.

They just pull out. I use a scriber, reach down and hook them and pull them out. If there is alot of carbon on them you may have to spray them first with degreaser to soften it. They have an oring on them as well. They are plastic so be careful.

I just ended up buying new ones. I figured if I ever did get them out I would probably end up breaking one or both.

I wasn't keen on the price at all! What a scam! It seems all the Mazda parts are tons of money. I had to buy the oil metering lines too for almost $25 each!

My engine is running now though. As soon as I take the oil pan off and fix the gasket leak there, I will be happy as hell as long as it lasts for a while.
