buying a RX7 2 Turbo Convertible (Jap Spec).

Hi all im Dale, and from the UK, Ive been to look at a Jap spec 1987/88 RX7 today, I really like the car but ive come accross a few problems so I thought i'd walk away and check here for some advice first, and then if alls ok i'll buy it ...

Right here are my concerns.

1, The car starts fine from cold, idle drops as it should etc, but after its warmed up it will start to puff out loads of smoke on idle, now when you rev the car or hold the revs, no smoke what so ever will come out of the exhaust!, and no smoke comes out when driving.. But as soon as you take your foot off the throttle and it idles, it will start smoking again, ive had pipes of the intercooler and there is not one tiny bit of oil, what can be causing this?

2, It will start fine from cold, but if its been driven even for like 20mins, it will not start again with ease, it took me 5 mins to get her to start again.

3, when I drove it hard it came on boost, then at 3000ish revs i hear a loud click??

4. Its got an uprated exhaust system, and i think the cats may have been removed, but there is a dash light lit up with a picture of the cat on it.

Ive seen recipts of a total engine rebuild 10k/2 years ago, and its been parked up for about 6 months/1 year, and was very rarely used..

The guy wants to know if i want it or not, so i need to know straight away if its worth buying and whats wrong with it, the body work is mint, but worried about the smoke on idle, even tho it doesnt smoke when driving. I'd apprecitate any help or info, and I havent a clue about rotary engines, and a little scared.

Thanks Kindly

Low compression is the problem for the hot starts (more then likely). You can try changing the plugs, oil, coolant, Fuel filter, etc and that should help a lot. Also a new battery always helps.

Not sure what the click is.

Also, damn you for living in a country that HAD the T2 Vert!!!

Jap spec, thats great.
If the click is the twin scroll, its easily disposed of (jk)
Maybe it will hapier with a tuneup like they said before, perhaps make sure all the fuel injection system/ignition grounds are OK (metal to metal, not too dirty)
I dont really know much of turbo's
Good luck with your Jap-Spec.

They could have reused the oil side seals and oil could be getting into the combustion area. I think I'd pass on this one unless the engine has a warranty.

but what i dont understand, is that it only smokes on idle, and not tiny bit when driving or revving it.

Is it white or blue smoke?

Difficult to start when hot means the car may need another rebuild (£1500). If you want to be sure get a compression check carried out on it. You can do it yourself (use the search feature on this site) or get it to the local Mazda garage to have it checked out.

Where abouts do you live? there are a few RX specialists around the UK who may be able to help tell you it it's a wrong'un.

If you have oil in the intercooler piping and you say it smokes, could be a blown turbo.

The nearest rotary specialist to you is WGT engineering in Northwich (M6 - towards Manchester) Number : 01606 48866.

Rotechnics are located near Reading - number 0118 988 8555

Good luck

There is no oil in the intercooler pipes m8, checked that.

Any chance the car could be running stupidly rich or something cos it only does it on idle.

Yes that is possable. Have a compression test done on the car. That should answer the most important question what shape the motor is in.
