Buying JDM engine, how hardcore of a rebuild is really necessary??

Hey what's up guys, I'm new here. I have a 90 rx-7 non-turbo and I'm planning on getting a JDM engine for it. I know it's gonna need some rebuilding though. But will I really need to go all out on it? You guys think I can get by with a basic rebuild kit: Apex Seals, Apex Seal Springs, Solid Corner Seals, Corner Seal Springs, Side Seal Springs, Viton Oil Rings, Pilot Bearing, and Seal Front & Rear Main Seals?

Or will I need to go with a bigger one like this maybe? http://www.atkinsrotary.com/store/cu...cat=591&page=1

I'm definitely a little short on cash at the moment though with another year of school coming up, but I wanna do all that I possibly can for my sexy beast.

good luck finding a JDM NA engine...

Any JDM or used engine should be rebuilt regardless of how many miles are on it. (that is, if you know how many) You don't know how long that engine has been sitting...Maybe 1 week, maybe 5 years....

You wont know until you get the motor and see if it runs and has good compression and seals. All JDM motors are turbo so I assume you are swapping and doing all the appropriate changes needed. If it is good just plan on a short life. If you want to avoid this it is far cheaper to just buy a remand motor for 1k.

As far as rebuilding. I have not rebuilt a rotary yet but I will put it into comparison and how I will rebuild mine soon.

Any engine rebuild should be done right and not slacked on. I would send the irons off to be lapped and check the housings are in good marginal specs and not just useable, replace as needed in a pair only. Reuse rotor if good. Reuse eccentric shaft and do oil mods. All gears seals springs o-rings bearings replace. Replace the oil pump and water pump. Fly wheel resurfaced new pilot bearing.

if you need an N/A motor that is a simple easy swap, www.venus-auto.com. they sell used N/A motors and I beleive they come with waranty. they're not JDM though. it's like they said... JDM motors only came in turbo form,.

as long as the motor isnt seized or blown/chunked, your rebuild can be as simple as a kit. while your rebuilding it, you should think of the LONG term. that would be the best time to possibly streetport and what not for later on or modifiying.

welcome to the club!

If you're trying to swap the 13BT into your non-turbo, rebuild the engine is the LEAST of your worries.
See FAQ stickies at the top please...

Uh, no. They sold convertibles with NA engine in Japan. Not sure if they're importing those to the US though.

No they didn't.

All verts in Japan came with Turbos as well.

Only Aus, NZ, US, Canada got non turbo verts.

thats pointless. the jdm version and the usdm version is the same. period. i would suggest getting a usedm version mainly because its been in use for years and will most likely run. the thing with jdm engines is that they sometimes leave the clips and engines themselves outside so its not soo good. so basiacally its pointless to get a jdm engine when a usdm engine will work just fine. also, i would stress that you convert your na to a turbo. it isnt that hard, and its cooler too.
