buy new housings from mazda, or RB/Mazdatrix?

The reason I ask, is this. THe mazdatrix and RB housings are alluminum, not cast iron. I've been told that the cast iron ones are much stronger, especially when it comes to the water jackets breaking from the inside of the housing.

So if I goto mazda, will I get cast iron ones, will they be a shitload more?

The iron ones will be much cheaper. The aluminum ones that RB offers that replace the stock irons are ridiculously expensive.

For example:

Intermediate S4 TII Iron: (Mazda OEM): $435 at Mazdatrix
Aluminum Intermediate: (RB) $1,550

Yea I know, they cost a fair amount, like 700+ I believe.

Any idea how much the stock irons are from mazda? Im going there tomorrow to pick up a few things again, so I'll ask as well. I just want to have an idea for tonight

It's been my experience that if you can wheel-and-deal with the Mazda parts guys, you can get the housing a BIT cheaper than Mazdatrix. By the time local tax was added, though, they were about the same (rotor housings, anyway)...

Why are you buying new Irons?? Surely there are some used ones that are still in spec that can be had for $13.47 each. Are you looking for lightweight performance?? And you used the word Housings did you mean Irons the way this thread has gone??

pretty sure he means irons... rotor housings don't have "water jackets" or coolant seal channels.

i agree with hammons... if you're not doing some SERIOUS punishment to your engine you can find great used irons for cheap... i found a low mile full core with no damage for $130. just be sure to inspect them for any corrosion.

eh.. **** sorry guys. I actually meant housings, not front, rear or intermediate plate.

If im going to rebuild, im defenitly going to buy new housings, the other parts I will re-use if they are good, most likely they are.
So the question is now, do the housings come only in aluminum from mazda, or are the mazdatrix/RB ones the only aluminum ones, and the ones from the dealer are iron?

If the housings are of iron from the dealer, do the aluminum ones from racing beat/mazdatrix have the same carbon inner coatings that the factory ones have for the FD?

I ask becuase (I've mentioned this before) I think using FD housings is totally worth it compared to the second gen ones. With that coating, thats why the FD's only have two oil injectors instead of four on the second gen ones cause theres less friction with the coating. I just want to make sure that if I bought new ones at racingbeat for example, that they would have the exact same inner coating protection as the ones from the factory.

So do they?

Rotor housings are all aluminum with a stell insert that is cast into the surrounding aluminum during manufacture. Racing Beat, Mazda and mazda trix rotor housing ars identical for the given year/model. (but you can order the RB/mazdatrixs ones with the water cooling jacket mod already done, and trust me its a PITA to DIY it.

I see where the FD ROTOR housings are about $110 bucks more than a series four housing. Just FYI. That's $110 more a rotor housing.

I myself would just use some used housings, would save you a bundle of money and you could use that extra money to invest in something that will give your car alot more hp. But if u have the money for new housings go for it , but im using my used housings...housings can last quite a long time if you treat the car right
