Burning Oil

Hi guys,

There's a Turbo II that I'm looking at, and as far as I know, the only problem with it is that it's burning a little oil. It's been theorized that it's the oil and coolant seals...but I've been thinking about it, and couldn't it also be a bad MOP. My line of thinking was that the MOP was putting too much oil into the fuel mixture and THAT'S why it's burning oil.
Am I totally off base here? Is there some way to check whether it's the MOP or the seals?

Thanks in advance,
Collin

I think it's only at higher RPMs...like 5k+

My money is on the oil ring on the rotor having failed. I'm no expert, but i believe that is remedied by a rebuild, however, with oil leaking into the engine, it should have preserved the interior components. Mine does the same thing and I will be rebuilding in april or may (Depending on finances and time available) However, if you rebuild before then, let me know how everything goes, this will be my first rebuild and I'm looking for any tips or advice I can get. Best of luck to you.

It could be a bad turbo as well.

So there's no way it's the MOP? Or are you guys just saying that it could be, but it could be blown seals or a blown turbo too?

Its most likely not the OMP. Even at peak flow, it really doesn't add that much oil.

Check shaft play on the turbo.

i have same prob. but i know mine has a bad turbo lots of play side and in, but mine also started smiking white at same time i think its coolant and stock turbos are oil and water cooled so im assumind that too is caused by bad turbo

I also am having some bad smoking problems, and with your desricption of the smoke coming at 5k+ rpms I would say oil is getting by the oil control rings on your rotors. A bad oil seal in a turbo would leak oil most of the time, not just at high rpms.

I talked to a friend who knows the car. He says it's smoking white. So it looks like it's leaking coolant...not oil...unless this one has the same problem as vato2000taco's does. I think replacing the turbo would be a lot cheaper than rebuilding the motor. If not, I'm guessing this is the coolant seals, which DOES spell rebuild? But still...an otherwise great Turbo II for $500...can't beat that, right?

well, youre saying its burning coolant, if you've got a coolant seal busted, there is coolant in with your rotors and you are loosing compression. If you continue to boost, the car will not want to start. Even if dont boost, it'll eventually 'not start'
