Well let's put it this way. If I wanted a 240hp naturally aspirated engine with 4 doors, yeah there are many cars I could buy. If I wanted a sporty car with a 240hp naturally aspirated engine, I could buy a Honda S2000.

My 3 biggest beefs with the rx-8 are:

i) 4 doors. Sure...I'll take my kids in the back when I'm driving 160mph.

ii) Styling. Sorry, I think the fd3s is far more aggressive than the rx-8. Then again...the Detroit Auto Show had some weird styles so I guess it's consistent on the whole.

iii) Guts. Come on...if this is a sports car, why couldn't they turbocharge it. And from what I have heard the displacement is even smaller than the 13B-REW.

I guess Mazda just needs to be competitive in their market...against Toyota and Honda....which is why they have a car in the same class as each of these (current production).

Now I know why all my old Mazda friends are buying BMWs these days.

i. I'm hoping you'd only do "160" when you are alone.

ii. I agree, but the RX-8 is more luxury. The FD is an all out sports car.

iii. I've heard they are going to offer a turbo model.

The rx-7 is a sports car.

The rx-8 is NOT a sports car.

Both cars still exist (if not currently produced) and will continue to exist. Comparing the rx-3 to the rx-7 is not a fair comparison and I don't think that the 7 and 8 should be put side by side either. The 8 will appeal to the same people that like the Lexus SC430, middle to older men who can't convince their wives to buy a sportscar but still want to have fun on the weekends.

The rx-8 should be respected as a medium to show the public the rotary engine and, hopefully, sway a bit more of the market to new concepts and away from the boinger.

I wouldn't own one, but I would have no problem with seeing one and talking to the owner about the engine.

Redwood: Have to agree..

NCSublime: Well I'll do 160km/hr with a passenger, but 160miles/hr is a very rare thing.. either way, the intention of a sports car is power & speed, and aesthetics. The latter you don't typically get with a 4-door car.

NC, do you know if they are going to release the rx-8 and see how it's popularity is before offering a turbo model? If they offer a turbo model, will it be a 2-door coupe or a 4-door?

Don't get me wrong. I'm pleased they are still making rotary sports cars. Who knows...maybe this is the step for getting the rx-7 back.

No, sorry. I'm not sure whether or not they are going to do a test market first, or what. I was just told that there would be an optional turbo model. It may not even be true, but that's what I've heard. You know how it goes.

Note this: The personal car of the president of Mazda is an RX-7.

I expect from the sound I heard from the renesis engine, that the dual intake and dual exhaust is about as free breating as you can get.

When my old 13b dies, I want that bad boy.
