Buildup: 89 vert, t04b, megasquirt, 6 port, etc.

I figured I would post up my buildup for the benefit of other forum members.

In June of last year I purchased an 89 vert that was relatively stock. It had a rb exhaust, cai, and some ss lines. Needless to say, it needed more horsepower. Since the engine had just been rebuilt, I strayed away from doing a turbo swap. Instead, I opted to turbo my 6 port using the normal 4-6 port mod using the turbo lim. After buying several different turbos(gt40, master power t4, to4b) for my setup, I finally decided upon using the garrett t04b which I had luckily scored for $210 brand new. With the assistance of a friend who also has an rx7, I started this project on September 5th. Right now the project stands completed, with the exeption of the exhaust.

Here are the majority of the parts used in my conversion(its detailed for people wanting to do it themselves):

Garrett T04b
Turbo intake manifolds and tb
hks knockoff wastegate and bof
se 680cc injectors
turbo II 550cc injectors
honda injector resistor box
SSAC HKS style turbo manifold
Megasquirt v3
Glens Garage wiring harness
New injector plugs
Oil line kit for the turbo
tap for the return line
Oil filter sandwich
bosch relays(30-40amp)
ebay intercooler piping
Gaskets- manifolds and oil pan
2-2.5" silicone adapters, one straight and one 90*
28"x12"x3" intercooler
L aluminum for intercooler support
modified turbo secondary fuel rail
Obx pulsation dampner and ebay fpr
taurus fan
2 guage wire(120") for battery relocation
various fuel fittings
new fuel hose
new air line
hose clamps
new spark plugs
block off plates
plx wideband setup
boost and afr guages
guage pod
various wiring
throttle cable clamp
new o rings

The only other things I used to my recolection, are tools, tapes, and glues/sealants.

I have spent around $2.5k+ on everything. However, this did include several purchases which ended up being the wrong parts.

I will try to post pictures up later tonight, if not tomorrow.

dude

you need more injector, seriously. 720 secondarys are barely enough if you push the stock turbo to its limits... i ran out of 550/720 on my big street ported T2 with a front mount. now i know it's a bit different on a turbo n/a but you are going to waste a ton of time tuning with those injectors and then find out that they are too small when you crank the boost up. you need at least 1000 cc secondarys to have a good cushion of fuel system capability

1) A "T04B" descibes a family of Garrett turbos.
It could be anything from an S-trim making 250hp to an H-trim making upwards to 400hp.
What compressor trim is it?

2) I don't see any mention of a turbo drivetrain.
If you're trying to get away with the non-turbo stuff, the car is going to be driven like a grandma - waste of time - or you're going to breaking drivetrain parts very soon.

I see this project failing...or at least eatings up a lot more money...soon.

If the NA trans and rear end are in good shape they will stand up to the abuse.

I cant remember, do the S5 verts have LSD?

Since it will be my dd, i wont be boosting too high. The injectors should be fine for my hp goal. If I do decide to go into a higher hp range, then I will upgrade the injectors. As of now, it is set at 6 pounds of boost. The drivetrain is the stock setup. A friend of mine has a similar setup and has run up to 350hp with no problems. I figure 250-275 isnt going to kill it. A stronger clutch setup and lightened flywheel will be added in a couple months. The turbo has a .96 a/r hot side and a .6 a/r cold side.

Yup, thankfully most of the other stuff is already done to my liking. Paint was redone a few years ago, wheels were replaced in the spring, all stereo componenets were changed out, seats were changed, along with a few other things. I was orginally going to sell it till I realized how much money was already in my car.

My brother was the one who had the 89-91 N/A tranny and stock LSD rear in his 79' mariah widebody rx7 running 350 rwhp for around 500 miles and about 280 rwhp for about 2500 miles before that on this drivetrain. Granted, the rears are different, but the trannies are the same.

Guys claim to have run V8's through the non-turbo rear end drag racing and still haven't blown it.
I've heard of non-turbo transmissions and rear ends blowing up with just exhaust / intake mods.
High horsepower non-turbos (170hp+) tend to break parts...without turbos.

You can't compare an SA chassis, cause the difference in weight is significant.

Doesn't the vert come with a 3.90 rear end?
That makes the driveline backlash even worse...

Be prepared to replace parts in a jiffy...

I broke my whole drivetrain in my 172rwhp n/a except my driveshaft. I broke my diff (at the drag strip with 5000 people watching no less), my diff mount, my engine and tranny mounts, and ultimately my tranny **** on me too.

but I was drag racing a lot and I stupidly had a completely unnecessary puck clutch

I don't see any mention of a fuel pump. Also, that's not enough injector. Don't base your injectors on the power you intend to make...go several sizes higher so that when you boost spike you aren't then replacing apex seals...

So for the manifolds, you used a 4-port lower I.M. an a 6-port upper I.M.? Wouldn't the L.I.M. block off the 5th and 6th ports? Or are you suppose to?

JasonDowney, I am very interested in your project. Mind posting pictures of the swap so that I can refer back to your project to complete mine?

Lol, yeah, I definitely need some rollover protection, but I'm not one to go around turns too quickly or endanger myself too much. That will probably be the next step after doing the clutch and flywheel.

If you want to see all the pics, friend request me on facebook; Jason Downey. I have around 60 up on there. Originally I tried uploading pics here but I believe they had a problem for a couple days when they made some updates.
