I thought i could remove the turbo while the motor is in the car but dam i cant get clear access to anything, so im pulling the motor anyways since i need to rebuild, will be alot easier to trim the necessary area on the housing and clock everything in my opinion. Hopefully my lazy *** gets the motor out tomorrow lol . I was waiting for the rebuild kit, since it is here, I'm excited to get this project done, but also got a million other things going on. I am really debating on doing a streetport on the motor.

Tonight i had took a dremel with a wire wheel on it and decently polished up the housing and went over it with mother's aluminum wheel polish. at least it is alot better than what it was before.

I am fairly confident with how clean these parts are now. They have some stains that I could not get out but i dont think they will affect anything, cant even feel them.

Once i get it test fitted, Ill measure the actuator arm and look for one, i like the idea of the adjustable arm on some of them.

That would work fine. You can get NPT fittings at home depot if you don't want to pay shipping on a $2 part.

ended up ordering that barb fitting online. Checked my local home depot AND lowes and both of them did not have it. *or my *** just did not see it on the wall display*

I just ordered a ebay wastegate actuator. 7psi. 3inch rod end with bracket. I'll be a guinea pig and see how this works out.

Stock wastegate actuator would probably work too by slotting the holes to fit the new housing.

Finally got the motor out.
didnt really appreciate the size of this t04b compressor housing til i placed it side by side

Glad to see my turbine is still in good condition, as opposed to what happen to the compressor wheel.

Still gonna be a few weeks before I get things running. gonna kick back for football sunday steelers and jets afc championship game!!

Does Garret have any part numbers for

A: the Compressor housing

B: The different wheel sizes.

I have a buddy that works at a company that rebuilds turbos but they need the particular part numbers for the wheels and compressor housing. Any helps appreciated.

Sorry i dont have any part numbers for you, not everyone here is the same since most of us took a gamble at buying old used turbos to scavenge for parts.
The wastegate actuator came in today
listed on ebay for t3/t4 with 3 inch rod end. 7 psi.

Fit is perfect.. I have yet to clean the parts and re-assemble the turbo since I been out all day *went to hollywood and santa monica*

But i have test fitted everything to see how it will bolt up.

wastegate bracket layout isnt finalized yet, i might flip it around and see how the arm looks.
freaking beautiful.

I still need to port the wastegate opening and clean it, *will take a wire wheel to the turbine side and see how it cleans up*, assemble then get balanced.

hypertek, use the "macro" setting (the one with the pic of a flower) when you take close pictures. the camera will focus a little better. =P other than that, lookin' good. can't believe i haven't opened this thread up in a while. i'll definitely consider this since i have the spare turbo in the garage.

another thing that will help prevent creep is look at where the wg flapper hits the rear plate and grind the area down alittle (angle grinder works great). i also grinded the back of the wg flapper as well, so that there is room for it to open up a little more

I also machined some of the metal out of the back cover to allow the door to open further. No creep on my car.

I had no luck finding any Garrett part numbers for anything but their current GT series turbos. I even contacted their official vendors, and they didn't even know what a T04b was. New parts will be fairly pricey anyhow, so your best bet is to find a used OEM Garret turbo to get the parts you need.

ok down to assemblying it and ran into some minor issues, just wondering what is the best way to settle this. The comressor wheel leaves a little bit of unthreaded turbine shaft, I suppose the only way would be to use some sort of spacer/washer ?

Also, in bumpstart's build up, he doubled up the trust springs, should I do that or stick with 1?

a bit of a situation i did not think about,
The bore i.d of my t04b compressor wheel is just a lil bit bigger than the shaft o.d, it slides onto it but just enough that it spins freely, where as the original compressor wheel is snug and has to be spun onto and will not spin as freely.

edit: looking at my old pictures of the to4b i must have forgot something! hahaha

Used 3 washers on there. This is probably sloppy though and running out of funding *this and trying to rebuild my motor while being unemployed freaking sucks*

Don't know if that is a good idea

Trying to find a shop local to balance it.. Some friends suggested this shop about 30 minutes away. http://turbocharged.com/main.htm
Called this shop and he said to balance it just bring the turbine shaft, compressor wheel and nut. But i told him about using washers and he said its probably not a good idea but he insist to bring it down.

I'd like to find a place closer who can just balance it as a cartridge.

I dont know, Getting kind of tired borrowing cars and scrapping cash for all this, the frustration of no job is kicking in.

the turbo gets balanced as just the compressor wheel and shaft.... they will mark the orientation so you can put it together

have you forgotten this bit ?

this will raise the compressor wheel about the height of these washers

and yes double spider washer is recommended when you have big compressor small turbine miss-matches
it will amount to less wear on the 270 bearing at higher pressure ratios

yeah i realized i forgot that piece goes on the outside, thought it went inside.. i corrected it now but still need washers.. I could probably reduce the washers to 2. just need to take it to get balanced
Yeah i ended up doing the double spider washers trick as well.

Looking at my compressor wheel, it is not as tall as others I have seen. Usually taller where it slides over the shaft.

Yeah, your wheel is missing the raised nose section. Is the nut that was originally used with it different? Or is the shaft threaded further?

My two T04b wheels:

Got it taken care of.
Got it balanced for $20 with a correct spacer for it.
Took less than 5 minutes for the shop to do it.
I didnt see the machine he did it on though, it was in a different room.

Good to go now

The barb fitting came in today. So i should hopefully have it slapped together tonight or so.

Will look at where to mount the barb. Ive seen some have it on the side of the housing so it is a straight down to the actuator, but that is where the seam joint is on the housing? Or just put it on the front face . Probably doesn't matter which.

My engine is on the stand so would be a good time to clock it and trim the housing to fit before I rip the engine apart. Just got busy doing yard work around the house.

Undecided about painting the housing, since i took the wire wheel to it, i really like the way it looks. Tho i do have some silver and black engine paint. Hmm black would be interesting tho if it has a more stealth appearance. Id like to see that =)

rough estimates, prices I list here include shipping since none of the parts I could get locally
Parts from ebay
$61.98 Seized T04B turbo ebay
$48.94 T3 T4 Turbo Single Port Wastegate Actuator
$5.91 90º Elbow Brass Barb Fitting 1/4 ID Hose x 1/8" NPT Air
$72.00 G pop shop T3/t4 basic rebuild kit (Kit is $59 but shipping was like 12 bucks or so)
$20.00 Balancing

=208.83

Not too bad
Considering my original turbo compressor wheel ate something and chewed it up, id say that is a pretty good price for a repair.. Now rebuilding my engine adds to the overall cost though lol
