careful leaving aluminum parts in automotive degreasers, they are usually caustic to aluminum parts(the compressor wheel is aluminum). a soft media blasting is probably the best way to clean it or a quick dip in some auto parts cleaner parts dip(usually carburetor cleaner based).
you can only tell which ears on the compressor need to be trimmed once you fit the turbo to the engine and clock it correctly. all compressors have the ears located differently so there is no way to know for sure until you try to mount it.

nah i never got the ebay rebuild kit.. once i learned that gpopshop was the only place to get a rebuild kit with the carbon seal. but i might go ebay for the wastegate actuator, i read they are good.
hmm i wonder how much it would cost to get these parts cleaned.. if its worth it.

is there anything wrong with using the ebay turbo chra? and using my turbine wheel and shaft in it? the t04b i bought off ebay a while back has the bearing looking deal on top of the thrust bearing. so i decided to use the ebay chra with my turbine and housing. it all bolted up smooth until the drain line. had to modify alittle bit. i know the ebay chra has crappy parts in it but the ebay one only had 1000 miles on it maybe. im going to have it balanced soon. what do u guys think of doing it like i did?

well the ebay turbo i bought was balanced u could see on the turbine wheel where they ground it. i never had any trouble with it for a year at 15 psi. so thats y i decided to use it for a hybrid. actually i just took it for a drive and it works great so far. got it all installed. holds right at 10psi. im gonna take it back apart and have it balanced. i just wanted to see how it would run.

i did have to clock it so i wouldnt have to grind it. (no grinder) it all works out fine because i have a front mount. and i had a waste gate laying around from a old hybrid i got with the car. the wheel was tore up and the back plate had a stripped hole from previous owner.

When most people say "ebay turbo", they're talking about the Chinese knock-offs that you see all over. Maz87T2, if the CHRA you used was from some a legitimate Garret/Turbonetics/etc... turbo, there should be no reason to worry. The Chinese ones are bound to be inferior.
What you have, Hyper, looks to be a factory T04B35 turbo from a Diesel. It looks just like the T04B25 I just picked up from ebay, which is identical except the compressor wheel is a U-trim (1.5mm smaller inducer). The CHRA on mine is also only oil-cooled, so no point trying to use it over my Hitachi CHRA.
Here's a picture of what I picked up. The wheel on the right is a V-trim that I'll be using once the housing is milled out to match. The U-trim wheel is the one on the left.

It also looks like my turbo uses a dynamic front seal, so I guess I'll benefit from a slightly updated seal design on my hybrid.

nice. how much did you pick that up for? I really want to clean this compressor wheel up, i havent tried carb cleaner yet, but i cant imagine that being better then what ive tried, even tried steel wool. I guess ill pick up some carb cleaner and see about that, if not, then Ill call some shops to see if i can get it dipped or something.

It was $100, but it's also not seized. It's in pretty decent shape, so I haven't had to do that much to clean it up.
I've used brake/carb cleaner in the past on aluminum parts, and never saw any signs of etching. Those cleaners are just organic solvents, and they evaporate off quickly. Hose it down to see if it'll clean up. It's anything acidic or basic that you need to watch out for. Aluminum will react with acid/base.

talking head
- there is a purge air port provided on the TB that will do this for you
( hook up a hose to each nipple and blow down it,, move the throttle , and you will be able to work out exactly which is which )
[ i have described it thus because there is at least 3 variations to the UIM nipples across markets ]
PURGE AIR IS FROM THE FRONT OF THE TB
if the car is auto then you can take the source from motor side of TB
( for various reasons that are too involved to discuss in one post )

Too old for this
