Brushable sealant for rebuild
Brushable sealant for rebuild
I went to autozone today in hopes of getting all the little chemicals needed to slap my engine together and brushable sealant (as bruce on RA video describes it) was the only thing they didn't have. The boss there told me to get it from maguires on monday. Is there something I can use in place of this stuff, I was hoping on finishing this rebuild before monday. It's just for flanges on the bottom of the engine I believe, I don't really understand why I need it but it's obviously highly recomended and comes in most complete rebuild kits.
nah this is supposed to be in addition to the hylomar. Someone in another thread refered to it as aviation sealant. I'm obviously not finishing by monday
. So kevin, are you saying that I can use hylomar to seal the flanges on the bottom of the motor?

Use hylomar for the coolant seal grooves and any o-ring that needs to be held in place during assembly. Hylomar does burn/wash off when the engine starts, so keep that in mind. It is obviously not good as a long term sealant.
Use permatex ultra black for every other sealing need on the engine...legs of the housings, oilpan, waterpump, intake, etc. Both are readily available at any autozone I've ever been inside. The ultra black is a drying sealant that withstands high temps yet does not appear gawky when it squeezes out of the seams like the orange and blue crap. IT is quite stiff when it hardens and withstands quite a bit of abuse.
I've used both on almost all the engines I've ever built, numbering well into the hundreds by now.

I guess I can just use RTV then. In the RA rebuid video they say use a type 2 brushable sealant on the feat of the housings, in between each housing to I guess seal the bare metal.... I didn't get why this was any different than all the other mating surfaces where I was using RTV.
I didn't mean to imply that I'd mix hylomar with it, i just meant it was another sealant besides hylomar and RTV.
