broke a bolt - dangit! now what?

so it's supposed to be easy - replacing the thermostat on my 87t2.

but, as usual, nothing is simple with this car..

one of the two bolt holding the thermostat housing broke. looks like the bolt is corroded pretty badly. now I am stuck.

1) anyone knows the thread size of the bolt and where i can go to get replacements?

2) and how to get the broken bolt off the waterpump housing?? (about 1/4" of the bolt is still sticking out of the waterpump housing so i can grab it if need be...but i think it is rusted pretty good. drill it out???)

Bummer......

Vicegrips will get it out if there is some of the bolt exposed. crank them down till you can't make them clamp, then loosen till you can just get them on there. You will prolly have to use both hands.

Most hardware stores will have replacement metric bolts, just be sure to get the proper grade ect.

A tap isnt to get a Bolt out, an EZ Out is. THe vicegrips will most likely work fine, but if they dont then you will need a set of EZ outs.

Heat the housing after removing all of the plastic and rubber peices.

(Meltable stuff)

Then after its good and HOT HOT HOT, vicegrip the bolt 90 degrees (like a laver) and rotate that sucker out.

it should come right out.

I have gotten at least 5 replacement bolts from my local autozone. I have replaced alot of bolts I took out and did not like the way they looked. Take the rest of the bolt, or a good one if you have 2 of the same .. with you to the parts shop.. you should be able to get a replacement. They even had some very odd ones I thought I would have to special order.

Go to a tool and die supply house and get some "left handed" drill bits. 90% of the time the remains of the bolt will back out of the hole from the friction of the drill. Blasr liberally with PB BLASTER

cool...i will try the left hand drill method first because the broken bolt is the one next to the engine and hoses (not the one closer to the rad)

just my luck, no?

thanks for your input....

Grade doesn't really matter - get the "8.8" stuff which is equivalent to the Grade 5 SAE rating; this is pretty standard stuff.

you could go to the dealer to get a replacement bolt....it'll most likely guarantee you have the right bolt and save you lots of trouble, but it'll likely cost more than any old hardware store

screw the dealer.. M6x1.0, they're very short bolts, too.

Easy out the remnants of the old bolt, use a tap to clean the threads, and in with a new bolt (use antisieze, aluminum hates steel

i have to agree with "screw the dealer" but sometimes, they're the only people who can provide the correct tranny bolts....

last time we needed replacement tranny bolts, the mazda dealership in oakland had no idea what we were talking about and pointed us everywhere to look for them

it wasn't until a month or so later that we found a dealer who did know what we were talking about....that would be the mazda dealerships in san jose and fremont...of course being special parts, they had to be special ordered from japan...
