Lightbulb Broke axle stub off in diff, dammittohell! advice?

Axle stub snapped, see picture. this is the passenger side.

So I’m assuming the diff has to come apart to get the broke bit out, which is gonna suck… looks like half the car has to come apart to get the diff out.

Any advice to make the replacement easier? I generally use the FSM.

Should I go ahead & replace both axle stubs as preventative medicine?

The stub broke on a single 4krpm launch (I baby my cars), car is n/a and has maybe 200hp on a good day. car has about 140k on it, previous owner auto-x’ed it some.

replace it just take the whole thing down subframe and all its easier that way pop it open, take it out the broken piece, clean it just incase of any metal fragments put it together ,new oil and stub in

or

get a t2 diff it wont happen again.

it happen to me sevral times got tired of it breaking., so i got a t2 diff ,now i done several launches on it and now i dont worry about it,of course i have solid mounts .

That officially sucks.

Here's a good write-up to help with dropping the subframe.

If you are going to go with a new diff soon you can just pop the other stub axle out and knock the broken chunk out of the diff while its still in the car.
Stray metal shavings or bits are the only problem with doing this so its not a long term option.

good to know, I was wondering if that was possible.

I think I'll start whith just trying to knock the other chunck out + drain the oil & look for shards. Maybe do a flush or 2, and find a magnetic bolt to catch any leftover bits.

I hate to trash the entire diff, the limited-slip feature still works (tested according to the FSM!), and it's quiet and tight. or, WAS quiet and tight.

Suggestions for a source for replacement stub shafts??

Thanks all

We usually have organ donor diffs around the shop but nothing available right now. U-pull-it yard is the way to go.

it was not too bad to get out. I'm really thinking to just repalce both axle stubs, button it up, flush the diff a time or 3 with fresh fluid, and hope for the best.

any idea if rockauto or other online source would carry these?

just broke my t2 stub on friday. took me 15 minutes to take it out. you simply un bolt the 4 bolts and slide the axle out of the way, then pop of the stub(should come of easy since its broken) then do the same for the other side now you stick a screw driver from the unbroken side and you hameer out the broken piece, its that easy, (make shure before you take out the broken piece that you get a magnet and take out any debree before it falls out into the diff.)
