breaking alt./water pump belt?

anyone elses car ever do this. its thrown its alternator/water pump belt off a few times now. ive been lucky enough to stop before it heated up but this last time was close. its the first night ive had my T2 running right in months and i was cruising with soem friends and got into a race with a 2nd gen GSX eclipse. i was pulling ahead and i heard the belt snap but i couldnt pull over for a little bit cuz there wasnt a place to turn off. the temp got a touch past half way and the add coolant buzzer came on right as i shut the car down. i dont think i did any motor damage, but correct me if im wrong. anyways, has anyone elses FC thrown its belts before? im just curious.

You sure you have the belt in the right lower pulley?
After you install it, look at it to see if it is not wobbling when idling. Those belts don't just cut off for no reason. It must be snagging on something or not in the right lower pulley.
