well on a rebuild my rule is usually after 5-700 miles do an oilchange and then again at 1000-1200 then just usual schedual. as far as the revs i would say 4 k is a good number to keep it under for at least 1000 miles. and little to no constant rpm's

why do people change oil at 100 miles is beyond me.

change it at 500 and then at 3000, all of the impurities will be taken out with the first oil change...

Generally rule of thumb for many builders...

Oil changes at 500, 1000, 2000 miles then after that normal intervals.

Keep under 4 to 4.5k rpms for the first 1000 miles, gradually increase rpms to 6k for next 500 miles, gradually increase to redline for last 500 miles ending at 2000 mile break-in.

Lots of people have opinions on this, search and you'll find this has been talked about a LOT. But that's what I generally think of for a good break-in. That being said, though, I monitor compression at 500 miles, 1000 miles, and every 50 to 100 miles after that and once my compression seems to have hit a plateau and is no longer going up, I consider break-in over. My break-in took 1300 miles and I was redlining it. No problems, compression stayed normal, everything was fine. So really you have to make the decision yourself about what you want to do.

Also, changing the oil as often as I stated above is a hazy area. I think if you do it at 500 and then 2k, and regular intervals after that, you'll be fine. I did it at 500, 1k, and 2k for mine, though, but I just wanted to make sure.

Also, forgot to mention, constant rpms should be avoided if possible. Vary the rpms, do city driving, try not to drive at like 3k constantly for 30 min or something, just keep it varying.

I'd change it from 500-700 miles, then 2000 miles, then normal changes. I did mine at 1500-2000 miles because I had server oil dilution problems. Had 7% fuel by volume when I sent it to have it analyzed. 20w50 ended up almost being 5w20 at 2500 miles. I didn't drive that many mioes on the car. Mostly went by date or color/odor of the oil.

This may shock you, but when I used to build engines, I'd change the oil at 100 miles, again at 500, again at 1000, and every 5000 from there on. That's 11.5 quarts in a 911. My Benz holds 8.5 quarts of Mobil1. The Benz dealer changes the oil at 500 miles on a brand new car. Mercedes doesn't do it for customer relations, there must be a benefit.

Four and a half quarts of oil costs practically nothing, so there's no reason not to do it. I did the 100/500/1000/5000 routine on my Rx-7. Is it a bit much? Not from my perspective. Of course, I expect engines to last 400 thou.

Where do you go to have your oil analyzed?

ive always read that your not supposed to go over 3.5k on a rebuild until 1000 miles, then after the 1000 mark to 1500 you can go to 6k, then after 1500, redline.

on a rebuild i would do a change at 500, 1000, 1500, then every 1500 miles after that. my regular oil changes i do at 1500 miles, 2000 if i procrastinate lol.

ill have a rebuild in my car soon, gonna get the magnetic oil filter ring and magnetic oil drain plug to keep as much metallic junk out as possible

I understand why you would have to vary rpms. But what could be the harm in running a constant rmp tooo long? I wanna know becaus ei plan on taking my 7 for a 1.5 hour drive in a week or so and i have less than a hundred miles on her.

^^^ yes... agreed... the oil lines to the oil cooler from back to front, that is so much dirty old oil there....
