Question brakes

One quick question, on my 91 NA, i was wondering if i had a single piston caliper or a 4 piston caliper on the front brakes. wheels do have 5 lugs (if that makes a difference). Its also my understanding that all rear pads are the same, is that correct?

I'm going to assume i have the 4 piston caliper on the front. i don't want to take it all apart till i get all the parts.

Any info will help, thanks.

You would have to look and see if they had 4 piston brakes. Do you have a A package (upgraded the interior trim, power sunroof, tilt steering wheel, cruise control, and 4 piston front disc brakes and vented single piston rear brakes)?

The 4 piston brakes have Mazda written on them and you can see it from the wheel opening.

The GXL, GTUs, were not available in 91,

The following had vented 4 piston front brakes with vented rear single piston rear brakes:

86-87 Sport
86-90 GXL
87-91 T2
88 GTU
88-92 'vert
89-90 GTUs (note the small "S")
and the 91 coupe with optional "A package".

Everything else came from the factory with vented single piston fronts and non-vented single piston rears.

Mark, if you have the vented 5 lug front disc, could you just through on the 4 piston calipers, or maybe an aftermarket 4 piston caliper in the front?

Uhhhm, I have an 88 with a sports package, and it has 4 piston front calipers. Meaning they made sports in 88 to. I'm just being nit picky.

Sorry, no you don't. The Sport was discontinued at the end of the 87 model year and replaced with the 88 GTU.

In 88 the following cars came with 4 piston front brakes, the GTU, the T2, the GXL, and the 'vert.

Pick one, but the Sport was not made or available as an 88.

No, you would have the "B package" on your coupe.

You could swap in the rotor and hub assembly to support the 4 piston caliper and brake system.

it would not be a just swap the caliper job, though.

But my car has an aero dynamics kit that came from the factory and the sport models are the only cars that came with that, or am I wrong once more.

The black rubberized 6 piece aero kit came standard on the 86-87 Sport, the 88 GTU, and the 88 T2.

It was also available as a dealer installed option on the 86 GXL.

In addition I have added the lower 5 pieces to my 'vert. So you can see that any S4 can have them.

You should be happy, the 88 GTU was/is a better car than the 86-87 Sport as it came with a LSD and the T2 seats that the Sport didn't have.

And don't confuse your 88 GTU with the crappy base model 89-90 GTU. Your 88 GTU was really the same thing as the 89-90 GTUs model, without the 4.3 rear end.

OK so I have a GTU and didn't know it WOW thats cool, did the GTU come with a LSD, I really don't think my car has that, but seeing as how I have been wrong here lately maybe it does, and is there anythink else that is distinktive about the GTU over other models, like how I know for sure that it is a GTU.

Road and track called the 88 GTU the real 10th Anniversary model, that they felt it a better car than the T2 10AE.

They wrote about the 88 GTU:
All and all, the RX-7 GTU is one of today's truly great driving machines, a superb balance of all the things that make a car go without sacrificing any of the qualities that make it nice to be in. At $18,150 it isn't cheap, but it's certainly reasonable.
and after also testing the 10th AE they said in the same article:
The GTU is the true 10th-anniversarry version of the RX-7, and a worthy one. We'll pick it any day.
