I don't know the details of what might go wrong, but I'd say just go ahead and do the swap S4 into the S5.

What you should do is download the factory manual, in specific the Fuel section for the N/T model of each series. There is a section called Control Unit in the Fuel section. It tells you what each pin for the ECU does. Compare the two series. You'll find there is probably not more than two to three wire/pins difference and you'll be able to sort that out pronto. If not write and tell us what the two or three differences are and we'll tell you.

Here is an example of a series four ECU pinout:

Now just go online at http://www.iluvmyrx7.com and download the same pages I sent above, except for a series five. Then just compare one vs the other. I did this on my N/T to Turbo 1987 car. There were only four wires that were different, and two of those were throwaways, so to speak. Piece of cake.

Another thing, early models used low impedence injectors. Any car with chassis numpber 550168 and older used low impedence injectors. Anything 550169 and newer used............high impedence injectors.

Low impedence= approx 2ohms.
High impedence= approx 12ohms

And after the swap, you might consider making the series five intake fit your series four engine. There is a thread on that somewhere on this site.

If using the series four in the five chassis, you need to move the split air pipe off the series four into the series five because it has the feed nipple for the auxillary ports attached to it. Uses exaust backpressure to make the aux actuators work.

Leave the series five harness in the car and use the series five alternator.

Its a turbo s4. no aux ports Thanks for the help. i didn't expect to get much on this board. esp all from one person. i really don't know how the wiring in a car works. i figured i just use the s4 ecu s4 harness and s4 engine then its all plug and play. so i'm really really having a hard time grasping this. Thanks a ton. any more info or comments please add

I would not recommend just swapping out ecu's without checking the wiring diagram. You could ruin the ecu. Do what the other guy said and check out the function and wiring differences. Also, the AFM should probably go too. There are also cluster gage connections to worry about.

Unfortunately, I'm not much help, cause my swap is an 88 TII into a 84 SE. I've spent weeks sorting these wiring diagrams out.

Good Luck

<sigh> ...here we go again...

The only real to make this work is to use every wire, sensor, relay, and part from one car and put it into the one you want to drive. You'll basically be making a "body" swap from s4 to s5. other than this, short of a LOT of hacking, hoping, rewiring, etc., it will not work out, and you'll end up with a project you'll be selling off in pieces for 200 bucks because someone says you have to move the junk cars that have been sitting for 4 months.

For the average joe, this is a 2 week to 1 month swap, unless you have a lot of tools, a large work space, and about 12 hours a day to put into it.

I strongly recommend you just find the engine you need and use it. The cars and components may look similar, but TRUST ME< when you get into them there are a LOT of little differences, enough that you'll get extremely confused and nothing will work out.

Im not saying it cannot be done, it certainly can. The average person cannot accurately do the swap with no/minimal experience (what you seem to have) in their back yard. Nobody wants to see you tear everything apart and not ever get it back together.

BTW< where are you located? SoVa, is that southern VA? If so you might consider having me do some of this work for you, or sorting it out for you, or something.

I'm not sure if this helps but here is one of the threads for s4 to s5 intake swap.
