Brake question 4 piston or single?
Wats up guys. I have an 89 GXL and i need brakes. Everywhere i look i see for 4 piston or single piston. How can i twll which that i have.
Thanks
Thanks
According to this post, the FAQ claims ALL GXL's come with 4-piston front (2 per caliper), 2-piston rear (1 per caliper).
This would coincide with my car. It's safe bet yours is the same.

If you have the money, I recommend getting them rebuilt while you have the calipers off. When I took mine off last weekend, I couldn't even return the pistons to the fully retracted position, 2/4 of the calipers were completely seized. (Explains my braking issues..)
Schucks did mine for like $250 for the entire set.

Don't mean to thread hijack btw.
If I might correct your information. The 4-piston calipers are just that. Each caliper has 4 individual pistons--two inside, two outside--all of which apply pressure on the pads when applying the brakes. The rear are single piston calipers. That is, one piston per caliper applying pressure on the inside pad when applying the brakes while the outside assembly of the caliper holds the outside pad in place against the rotor.

Thanks for the correction mate.

That's probably just the pad rubbing lightly against the rotor. Normal. Check the pad thickness to determine if they need replacing. If you can still see the groove in the center of the pads, you should be OK. If not, replace the pads.
Not to mention, my previous calipers were seized, in every sense of the word. no amount of effort I tried got the piston to come in or push out. (Yes, I tried using the brake master cylinder.
I consider the rebuilt calipers from Schucks to be a deal. It was of a far higher quality than if I were to rebuild them myself. They actually had them shipped in from somewhere, and I get to keep these cores until I'm happy with the new ones.
im just saying mine where shot, all it took was an air compressor to blow out the pistons, rebuild kit, alittle sand paper and some paint. if you think it was a deal thats all that counts, i just saying that the original poster shouldnt expect to have to pay nearly that much
