Brake light problems

So my tailights were perfect until i changed to new rims. So the problem is that the brake lights do not turn off unless i pull the battery off. Even when i switch the light switch off its all still on. Any ideas guys??

The new wheels had nothing to do with it.

Check the brake light switch on the pedal.

Green/White wire supplies constant voltage to the switch. When the pedal is depressed the voltage on the G/W wire is passed onto the White/Green wire which then light up the respective bulbs. The W/G wire should not have voltage on it when the pedal is not depressed. The stop light switch can be adjusted but maybe the relay aspect is stuck to the closed position which would result in the brake lights staying on.

EDIT: Brakes use the Stop fuse (20 amps).

Like I was saying, the W/G wire should not have voltage on it when the pedal is not depressed. With a multimeter in hand this would take 1 minute to check this wire.

If the lights in the rear were on when you did this you might be confusing the brake lights with the tail lights. Go to the rear of the car and pull the carpet away to get access to the tails and check whether the Red/Black wire or the Green wire has voltage on it if the lights that you speak of are still on. R/B powers the tail lights and the Green powers the brake lights. Locate the bulbs which are on and follow the wires to the white plug nearby and check for voltage there.

No key necessary as both the brake lights and tail lights and so on work off of the battery buss fuses which are powered constantly (24/7).

Edit:

When the brake lights are on is the third brake light in the back lit up as well?

i dont think so. also like i said the only way to turn off the brake lights right now is to pull the battery connections on the front off because the lights are always on even when the keys are out of the car.

The 3rd brake light uses the exact same wire as the regular brake lights so that would be really weird if it wasn't on.

Another thing. The CPU has two plugs at the bottom. One has 6 wires while the other has 4 wires. This 4 wire plug recieves the W/G wire from the stop light switch and passes the voltage onto the Green wire in the 4 wire plug. Take a jumper wire and feed one end into the plug where the Green wire is and use the other end of the jumper wire to measure the voltage off of if there is voltage. This wire has to have voltage if the brake lights are to light up in a normal manner. Maybe your wiring has been altered. Who knows until you check what needs to be checked.

Again, the lights don't require keys as they receive power from the battery buss fuses which are connected straight to the battery.

yes i know you dont need the key but my lights are on if i dont remove the terminals in the front. Its like its stuck on ON or something. Could it also be the switch itself?

When you checked the W/G wire for voltage did you check it w/o the brake pedal depressed? I understand your dilemma but there's only so many reasons for your brake lights to be stuck to the on position and talking about it will only solve so much. You've been provided with enough info to see what the cause is now it's up to you check what all is involved.

EDIT: Not sure what switch you refer to. Stop light or some other switch?

Simple thing to do is pull the 20 amp Stop fuse and see what happens.

can you give me a guess on what that 20a blown fuse connected to the w/g wire was? previous owner spliced the w/g wire and connected a 20 amp fuse but i took it out since it was blown, should i replace it? or what could it have been used for?

Check the link and toggle down the page provided for the pic of the fuse box cover. Not sure what you mean about W/G wire being spliced and connecting a fuse to it. Was this fuse you speak of located in the fuse box or located in line? Also, when you checked for voltage on the W/G wire before are you certain you used a proper grounding source for the multimeter?

umm i used the gas pedal as the grounding source so maybe that was a no no? also the fuse was inline and it was blown causing my dashboard light to dim when i pressed on the brake pedal. when i took it off everything was just fine. Till i recently had the car state reffed then went to my friends shop to switch tires but also replaced the studs in the front. We did hit out the studs will that cause any problems? im just trying to remember what i did so i can get to the bottom of this.

How about pulling the plug with the W/G and G/W wire out of the switch and check the brake lights. Also, there's no reason for any splicing and in line fuse. And I'm calling "bunk" on the W/G wire not having voltage on it.

I'll provide a link to a pic of the Circuit Opening relay (located under the dash to the right of the steering column) which has a solid Black wire that can be used as a ground when checking for voltage on a wire(s) down under the dash such as W/G or G/W.

That's solid Black. Not Black/Red, not Black/White, but solid Black.
