Bout to buy a TII, What Ya Think?

Well...this Saturday(after noon to be more precise) I will (highly likely) be a new owner of 1987 TII RX7.

The car has not had a rebuild and has 150k on the motor. The shocks have been replaced, the interior is in good condition, but the paint is fading. The Master Clutch will need a rebuild, driver door lock is messed up, sun roof is kinda slow, and the power windows have a hard time going up and down. The guy started the car last week, but other than that it has sat for over a year and he is selling it because he is now married and does not have time for the car. He asked me alot of questions about the rex and told me he wanted it to go to a good home. He was very informative about the car and knew alot of information that only good car owners/roto heads would know. He stayd on the phone with me for over an hour talking about the car, this and that, and all of the problems it had, ect. ect.

The rims are in good condition, no wrecks, and this is the second owner(bought it from a dealership after someone traded it in) It has a clean title, manual, no powersteering, the stero has been replaced, the AC works but the solenoid allowing the ac for the feet to work has gone out. The turbo is still in good shape, but there may be some vac leaks.

The major concern to me is that there is a leaky hose from the radiator i believe, or a leaky Coolant leak somewhere. He recently replaced the exhaust gasket. Do you guys feel that I should follow up on the deal? The guy is really nice and I have been wanting to get a TII. The price I will be paying is 1100-1200.

I would do any mechanical work my self, I am getting fairly decent with working on the rex. Stripped my 85 GSL-SE and fixed various problems, plus stripped an 86 and put it back together and got it running after it had sat for over 4 years(I can almost put that damn thing together with my eyes closed!)

So what do you guys think on the price and if it is a good deal?
I already have everything saved in "my cart" on various online stores and have done alot of research(my gf says too much research) on what to get and do, ect. ect. I plan to drive the car until I have all of the parts(including a rebuild) to swap out all at once. That includes new brakes and lines, suspension, engine rebuild, port waste gate, exhaust(apexi GT RP is only an hour away) , turbo rebuild, replace all vac hoses and rubber hoses when I pull out the engine, replace the broken interior parts, and I will paint the car with either a buddy or my uncle. Anyways, do you guys think it is worth the 1100-1200 for a running working 87 TII except for the problems listed? Thanks alot guys

I know not much of RX7 for I am new, but for that price and it is running I would go for it! You know that the car has had respect for having 150k on a TII original motor. I would do it. Get others imput before doing it though. I would think you may want to save for a new motor.

Offer $1000, settle for $1100 if he haggles, and pick her up. You can part her out for more if nothing else.

As for the power windows...I just installed manual cranks from an SE in mine. I hate TII door panels and can't stand power accessories...

Thanks for the advice so far guys, there wont be any parting out though. I think she will look sexy along side my (currently in progress) 85GSL-SE TII Swap.
Keep the advice coming!

thank you, **** power accessories.

Sounds like a deal man, I'd go for it.

Expect a rebuild asap though.

Sounds like a good deal for a potentially great project.

I bought my TII with almost 140k miles on it (stock) and it lasted for almost a year before I over-heated it (my fault).

Granted, it wasn't FAST by any standards because it was bone stock on a tired motor, it was still a great intro into the wonderful world of turbo rotaries (lol).

I'd definitely buy it.

Make sure you do a compression test though, JUST so you know what to expect from the motor... For comparison's sake, I tested my TII several months after buying it, and got #'s of around 90-95 front and 85 rear. 100+ would be awesome (but unlikely).

Post pics!

K, I'll make sure to take a compression test. They are kinda expensive though arent they? I am used to doing the free man's compression test. Oh well, guess thats what the search button is for.

As for the project....I plan to restore it and do only minor mods to get it into the 200-220hp and give it to my sister as a surprise bday present for her next april. Thats what I am really excited about. After she learns to handle it very well, I will give her the parts from my TII Swap into my fb which she would then potentially run 300. But GAWD I AM EXCITED TO START WORKING ON THIS BABY! I will post pics ASAP when I get it home that sat night and more when I take them on Sunday morning.

Cracked water seal maybe? If so, it's a bit more work than just a leaky hose.

Yea, I think he was telling me a cracked house, but if its a water seal than it will be a little bit of work, if it isnt the seal or pump then it would be the engine...egads!

EDIT:
Just saw the price on compression testers, only 20bux at auto zone cheaper than I thought....I cant wait for the weekend!

w00t! I picked up the car! And DROVE IT HOME! It hadnt really been driven for about 4 years and it made a 50mile trip home I need to def adjust the tps(idled at 1.5k) . I will give it a complete tune up tomorrow. The leaky hose and clutch were fixed. The engine ran good, no smoke. I think the turbo may need some help. I kept looking at the gauge. Sometimes it would boost up and other times it wouldnt. I think also that its just cuz it had sat. WEll anyways, pics tomorrow!

Man, this was a hella deal! Alot better shape and working condition than I thought. Tomorrow I am going to attempt to re-wire the fuel pump, for those who have done it, is it very difficult and how much time did it take you?? Thanks alot!

EDIT:!!

Also, is the 02 sensor narrow or wideband? I was going to order an autometer air/fuel gauge from summit. Anyone got any tips? Thanks!

Here is my list
o2 Sensor
oil- 6.1 Quarts of 20 W 50
oil filter
fuel filter
air filter(Cone mod)
spark plugs

LSD- 1.4 Quart API GL-5

w00t! Damn I worked I dont know how long last nite. Thank you FullCircle for all of your help! We gave that thing a complete tune up! And it is definately running better. The KN cone and adapter are on their way as well as a 3in TID and CAI box will be made shortly. I will make it after I get my cone and TID.

The car idles at 1.5-2k. I need to adjust the TPS,which seems like a b!tcho compared to NAs and my FB! Freakin TMIC! I also believe there are probably several VAC leaks. Today I need a new top and bottom radiator hose. It leaks coolant, but from those hoses, which is a relief.

But overall it is a blast, alot more power than my FB....however I do prefer my FB. My sister on the other hand loves this car and prefers it over my FB any day, which is perfect since it is her car!

Thanks for the good luck wishes party_kid2 and I will keep things updated and will post pix when I get a chance to get my hands on a digi cam. Heck of a steal of a car for only 1100.

Awesome. My car leaked coolant, but it was inside the engine.
Congrats on the find.
