Please Help...Wife is going to Kill me...Hesitation Problem!!

OK,
86 RX7 was parked for 2 mos and flooded. Did deflood procedure and got car running and battery recharged.

Also changed out A/C belt that was shredded w/no problems.

Yesterday went to the exhaust man and got precats eliminated and added new high-flo cat w/larger pipe coming from engine. Upon leaving muffler shop, and accelerating I hear some type of squeaking, noise. It's gotten a little better but now I am having serious hesitation problems and low idle. It's actually died twice since then on the road. Startup seems rough as well.

1st gear seems good and acceleration is fine. In 2nd gear I get real rough acceleration at first, much hesitation and lots of jerking. 3rd gear is better than 2nd, 4th and 5th gear hesitation is present on the highway.

This is my wife's car and she hates me working on it!! Now she thinks I caused this hesitation problem. PLEASE HELP BEFORE I AM KILLED. Just kidding.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

-Anthony

Sounds like the tps is out of adjustment. Bad grounds. Because it was sitting so long, there may be a serious problem in the engine. Could be shot. Timing May be off.

Your new exhaust may very well have caused a problem with the 6p system. It shouldn't really cause a hesitation, but it not working propperly on an older car with lower compression could be partially to blame.

Another thing to consider is your plugs...flooding can foul plugs.

Then you have to take into consideration why it was flooding to begin with...leaky injectors? Poor compression? etc

Yeah just up 610 to TC Jester. Thanks for offering help. Due to my schedule however it may difficult to meet up the next week or so.

I really appreciate your offering however. Any things I should start to do?

How about: Check plugs and wires for starter?

Plugs, wires, TPS, replace the old fuel if it hasn't been done already, clean up the stock engine grounds.

There's a few engine grounds that could be corroded/missing (one from the firewall -> bell housing, another on the back of the engine, etc), generally you can just make sure they're there, clean up the connection (if it looks corroded/etc). Anyway, I'll be around for the next 4 hours if you find some spare time.

If you dont feel like cleaning the stock grounds(pain in the ***, sometimes), you can add a couple. Using at least 8 guage wire, go from the neg. battery terminal to the drivers side strut tower nut. Be sure to sand the paint off where the groung touches the body. If you want, you can then run one from there to the alternator mounting bracket. Solved my hesitation problems. Look for more at www.rotaryresurrection.com.

I say definately replace the plugs. Theres a good chance you have grounding isues as well. Its possible that a ground got knocked off when the exhaust was installed.

Ah, I think the posts so far are barking up the wrong tree.

He says this is an 86- which means non turbo- which now screams (the fact that he had a high flow cat and pre-cats removed) that his aux ports are not working.

I would guess that the mechanic/shop that did the high flow, didn't hook up the air line from the ACV, which would then no have any pressure to work the aux ports.

Since the aux ports normally come online at 3800- around the same point the 2ndary injectors kick in, there would be a major dip/flat spot there with them closed.

I'd be checking the aux port operation before anything else

This makes perfect and the most sense so far!!! When at the shop I saw that small diameter line coming off of the cat and had no idea what the hell it was. He cut it first and then reattached (welded) onto the new cat.

What should I do to check the aux ports...I think that makes sense b/c I remember thinking what that smaller tube was...

What's the hesitation like? Running into a brick wall and the car just dies/etc? Or does the car just seem to slow down and lose power and not climb as fast?

Not quite like running into a brick wall. It starts to jerk on the way up the rpm's. Also, I did a uturn and the car died.

It seems like it's getting gas in intermittent burst in 2nd on up to 5th gear.

If it were the aux ports, usually it just feels like the cars running with a clogged air filter, it doesn't really 'hesitate', it's just slower than ****.
