Check the for sale section. NA tranny's run very cheap, I've seen people selling them as low as $50. I don't think you'll be spending much more than $100 (unless you have a mechanic put it in).

Well that is definitely good to know. I have a local buddy with all the tools and (most) of the know how to install or at least partially rebuild and install. He has done a lot of civic, accord, eclipse and 240 tranny's before- is the rx7 much different or difficult?

I just topped it off with fresh fluid so hopefully I can drive it until I find a cheap enough solution. Again, I appreciate all your guys' input a lot! Thanks!

The RX7 tranny is actually more like a "normal" tranny vs those front whell ddrive cars. and should actually be easier. You just un bolt it from th engine and driveshaft and drop it, you don't have to worry about all the front end stuff with it.

And since you will be replacing it anyways, driving this tranny till it dies is not a problem except for you getting stuck, but just pay attention and you should be able to tell before that happens.

that's the plan!

Honestly though, if I keep it filled, it should last a good while, until something really blows.... right?

Yes, manual tranny are actually pretty tough. Is it rough now? If not then it should be fine for a long time, if it is a little rough i would look into some lucus (SP?). It is thicker and can help things like this last longer.

Really, you are usually better off getting another tranny, both in price, labor and ease of doing it. just the parts for a rebuild would cost more then another tranny.

But if you are stuck on rebuilding, the dealer is one, but they will eat you alive. I am still new to RX7's so i don't know of any other places yet.

Wait a minute here!

You keep "topping off" the tranny fluid? So you are crawling under the car every few days to put more gear oil into the tranny?

Why are we talking about a new transmission? Yours leaks oil, that's it! Would you replace your motor because it leaked a little?

Just drop the tranny, replace the seal, (you don't even have to take the tranny apart if I remember correctly), put the tranny back in, and you are good to go!

It is like a 2 hour job! Put a new clutch in while your in there and it may take an afternoon, but your good to go for a loooong time!

It leaks, and 2nd gear is "gritty" feeling, not to mention R is hit or miss. 3rd and 4th have bearing noise. If I find a cheap tranny I'll replace it, otherwise, like you said- replace the seal and top it off. It'll drive for now, but I'm thinking long term here...

Ok, I found a few pretty cheap transmissions, 1 of them (my first choice if it'll work) is an S4 NA- I just want to be sure that an S4 NA will work with my S5 NA engine.... From my understanding it should bolt right on. Correct?

The leak you have is coming from the rear main or rear stationary O'ring.

Hey football. Just for a heads up. I do almost all my own car work on my 7. I had an oil leak and it was dripping off the bottom of the engine. So i kept looking around the rear of the engine for the leak.. Never could find it. So it turned out the Be a leak at the oilcooler. And you wont see Anything unless you take the black cover off the bottom of the car in the front to show the oil cooler and the lines. the oil flows back when driving.

about the tran. fill it and drive it. why replace if it works? Just keep a look out for Gear oil. that stuff cant be mistaken for engine oil. trust me
