bought an 86 and I'm having some problems...

Ok so this is what's happening. Recently the car has been grinding whining and won't go into gear sometimes. The tranny has 92k on it as does the motor. If u are in 5th gear on the interstate going 65 - 75 it grinds horribly and if u push the clutch in the rpms stay where they are when the clutch is engaged. I do not know whether I need the tranny flushed, clutch replaced, or what. I thought that since there was a lot of play in the pedal that that may be why so I fixed the play and it is worse now. Also the shifter is very loose and the "original" I got when I purchased the car will not fit into the shifter housing because the bigger ball will not go into the hole. I don't even know if the tranny is right because it was an automatic originally. Any and all help would be appreciated as the car is needed to deliver pizzas. I just don't know if I need to get the entire tranny rebuilt or what. If you think I do can someone point me in the direction for a guide on putting a s5 tranny in an s4. All help is appreciated and fast replies are even more appreciated.

S4 and S5 transmissions swap without any modifications. They're interchangeable.

There is supposed to be some freeplay in the clutch pedal. The exact specs are in the manual, but approx. 1/8" will work.

But grinding when you press the clutch in at 65-75 mph is odd. There is never any grinding at other times? I would say throwout bearing, but that should make noise regardless of gear/speed.

It is starting to do it in all gears now and starting to keep the clutch petal on the floor and not allowing u to go into any gear but reverse. Also it is grinding and whining in neutral now. How hard is the replacement procedure for the throwout bearing and also could it also be low on fluids?? If so how do I check???

sounds like the clutch is not fully disengaging.

the cause of that could vary. possibilities could be, but are not limited to:
-air in clutch hydraulics
-low fluid in clutch hydraulics
-leakage in the clutch hydraulics
-plastic pivot for clutch release fork worn/broken (inside bell housing)
-worn throwout bearing

how did you go about fixing the free-play in your clutch pedal? its a hydraulic system so it is supposed to be self adjusting.

I suggest you check the clutch fluid level and bleed it first. if that does not fix or identify the problem, drain the transmission fluid and check it for abnormalities such as metal shavings. from there, the transmission is going to have to come out in order to inspect other components.

Ok so I adjusted the pedal by adjusting the spring under the dash. I do not know how to go about checking the clutch hydrolic lines so how would I do that and also how do I change the transmission fluid. Any info on the fluid type for the clutch and what weight gear oil I need for the transmission fluid

Clutch fluid is the same as brake fluid. DOT3 or higher.

If you open the hood and look at the back of the engine bay on your right, you will see two reservoirs - the larger being for brakes and smaller for the clutch.

The clutch reservoir is connected to the clutch master cylinder. Follow the line coming out of it to the transmission and it will lead you to to the clutch slave cylinder. Inspect all of these components for leakage. On the slave cylinder, there is a nipple. This is where you will bleed the clutch hydraulics from. Do a search on how to bleed a clutch hydraulic system. Its simple - just remember not to let the reservoir run dry.

Changing transmission fluid -
looking at the transmission from underneath the car, there is a large bolt on the bottom of the transmission - this is the drain bolt. On the side of the transmission, I don't recall if its the left or right, there should be a similar looking bolt - this is the fill bolt. To drain the transmission, remove the drain bolt - same as draining the oil. To fill the transmission, reinstall the drain bolt and remove the fill bolt. Fill the transmission until fluid starts to come out of the fill hole. Reinstall the fill bolt and you're done.

one important note about draining a tranny, or anything else or your car. make sure you can remove the fill plug BEFORE you remove the drain plug. you'll be in a world of **** if you were to drain your tranny and for some reason couldn't get the fill plug out.
