Boost Sensor?

Ok my RX-7 is being a jackass. Sometimes it runs fine, sometimes it rev cycles and regardless of the throttle position it won't rev over 2000, and sometimes it'll rev over it but hesitate a few times. Now my mechanic replaced some wiring a while ago because it wouldn't start, now it starts but does this. The wiring aparently goes to a "Boost Sensor". My car is a GXL, so why does it have a "Boost Sensor"? They showed me the ALLDATA diagram and showed the wiring the replaced that goes to it. So they want to replace it now and it should work. My questions to you: Do I have a "Boost Sensor"? Does it go bad often? How much is a new one? Where can I get a new one? How much is a used one? Where can I get a used one?

Thanks.

it is called a boost sensor on an NA and a Atmospheric pressure sensor on a Turbo; go figure! It is that little 1 inch by 2 inch black box looking thing hanging off of your passenger side shock tower.

Boost sensor on a N/A and Pressure sensor on a turboii. The Atmospheric pressure sensor is located above and to the far right of the passengers feet.

I was close!

What is the real "Atmospheric pressure senosr" for then? Do both NAs and Turbos have one?

Mazda calls it a boost sensor for 86-88 model years, and a pressure sensor for 89-91 model years. It's purpose is to measure engine vacuum, and send a proportional enecrical signal bak to the ECU. The boost sensor also sent a signal to the up-shift light, which was on some of the 86-88 cars. They do occassionally go bad, but from my experience it's not often. They're not cheap either. I once priced a new pressure sensor for my 90 GXL, and the dealer wanted about $300. I decided to buy one from the junk yard for about $25.

The atmospheric pressure sensor measures barometric pressure. On the 86-88 model years, the atmospheric pressure sensor is a small box-like object, which is located under the right-hand-side dashboard. On the 89-91 cars, the atmospheric pressure sensor is built into the ECU, and cannot be replaced without replacing the entire ECU.

Just some trivia here. If one reads the 87 factory service manual, he WILL find in the FUEL section for the N/A, that it is called a BOOST SENSOR. If he then goes to the manual and looks in the Fuel section for the TURBOII, he WILL find its called a PRESSURE SENSOR. Go to http://www.iluvmyrx7.com and check it out.

Atmospheric sensor is there to determine if your at sea level or driving around Denver Colorado. The ECU makes adjustments for altitude, just like if you had a carb car, you'd have to change jets in the carb to obtain max performance at altitude and vice versa.

If you get another boost/pressure sensor for your car, make sure its for the right application. They look the same, but have different outputs for the same pressure/vacuum.

Bottom line: your car, a 86 n/a, has a BOOST SENSOR.

Go to http://www.mazdaformance.com/rx7parts.htm and download the proper section for your car for the right part number.

Yeah, on 89 and up, they call both the n/a and turbo a PRESSURE SENSOR.

is the pressure or boost sensor on the 86-88 n/a the same as an 86-88 t2? Is it the same part #?

Id imagine it may use a slightly different voltage for different readings for vacuum/boost. Go get the correct part.

NO, the turbo and the n/a are different. I swapped them one day for the fun of it and found it really makes the car idle funny.

If you look at the fsm, that's free at http://iluvmyrx7.com you'll see the output's are quite different, even at idle.

It's a no/no to swap b/t the turbo and n/a.

I don't think it is the boost sensor. Anyone else?
