Boom, loss of power
Yeah i know that I'll get told to search but i short on time here. I was driving today on the express way at about 4000 rpm in 4th gear and I hear a boom like a huge back fire and I lose power. I pull over and of couse I'm like **** this engine is toast. I do a quick poor mans compression test and it's a strong chug, chug, chug from the front rotor. So I test the rear rotor and I get the same strong chugging that sounds like it belongs to a strong motor. So finally I do both and it's steady and stong.
Okay so I go to try and turn it on. It turns on but idles really low. As soon as I go to give it gas it dies. I really need this thing running for this week. Any suggestions beside get a real compression test done? Can fouled spark plugs cause this?

I will change out the spark plugs as soon as I get the chance. What should I look for on the turbo? Bent blades? And I will get a real compression test done, But for the moment it sounds strong three nice pluses from each rotor. Anything else?
Sorry I should have metioned it is an 87 turbo.
No smoke at all.

this same thing happened tome yesterday, turned out to be a tmic hose that was loose. I would check to see if the one that is connected to you turbo is secure, that might explain the chuggish behavior.

I feel it is probably a nicely sized vac leak. Check all vac hoses, connections, etc.
But yeah, check out the spark plugs (highly unlikely, but ok), and do a real compression check. Theres no sense in working on a motor that could be blown

I will look at all vac lines, but the boom them seemingly good compression has me baffled. Since the car will not move does anyone recommend a certain compression tester? Can I rent a regular one from one of these auto stores?
Funny thing is there is one of the very few rotary shops about 5 min down the road but i can't get there.

Want to learn MORE
Same thing happened to my 88 turbo II. I trouble shot it for a month and changed out everyting from my o2 sensor to my fuel pump. Heard a loud pop motor didnt want to stay running at idle but the only difference was mine also started baking the cats after the pop. Never figured out what it was just got tired of looking, bought a crate motor and that fixed it so it was something internal.

popped off an intercooler hose or blew a hole in one, that is the only hose that would make a "BOOM!" type of noise and cause a power loss if it is barely holding on. happens to me all the time when i try to push past 15PSI(i need to weld up some lips on my IC pipes)...
engine failures are almost always silent but deadly, the rare occasion you can hear a seal fail it is usually a really soft "*****" sound then a huge loss of power.

I believe you can compression check for a blown seal on a cold engine because I've done it!

Wow you guys can sure dig up some old threads. It had turned out to be fouled plugs, however that motor is long gone now due to some idiot going for a joyride and blowing an oil cooler line while he was probably deep into boost creep. ******* *******.
