I have 87 NA with racing beat downpipe that goes to racingbeat presilencer. Car exhaust fumes are pretty strong which i know is common with these cars.
Question 1 : If I add a bonez high flow cat to my system will it reduce this smell any ?
Question 2 : Can I install the bonez non turbo cat to my racing beat down pipe without buying the racing beat header and just extend the tube to fit to my catback without any problems?
Also im talking bout the Bonez on rx7.com this one also has the tube for the 5th and 6th acuator function. Anyone have expeiernce with this working on their builds ? Thanks
The RB downpipe and Bonez cat are the same setup I'm currently running on my non-turbo S5. There is no exhaust smell when using this cat. The Bonez cat is the same length as the RB presilencer. Therefore, it's a direct swap.
That's the question that I was going to ask you once you get the cat installed. I've always run a cat on my car to eliminate the strong exhaust smell. My guess would be that the noise levels are about the same, but that's TBD.
I wish I got a cat from the start. Didn’t relize how bad the smell would be . Especially driving around creates unneeded attention and smell that honestly makes a lot of people complain lol.
and yeah I would guess it’s about the same as well but I will update this and let you know when I get it. Might be a couple months tho. In the process of doing some bodywork and repainting the car. So once I get that done I will most likely buy the cat.
This is good to know. This fall, I was planning to upgrade my exhaust system to the Racing Beat Down Pipe, Pre-Silencer, and Y-pipe after doing some transmission repairs. Looks like I will have to substitute this catalytic converter for the Pre-Silencer if the exhaust smell is that bad!
So I’ve been using the cat for a few years now . Smell isn’t totally gone but definitely is better. Sound was a bit louder nothing too noticeable tho. In short , I’d recommend the cat. Save some smell and get some sound.
After reading the posts on this thread, I became inspired to build a "presilencer" out of a catalytic converter. As mentioned earlier, I plan on upgrading the exhaust on my 1990 FC convertible with a Racing Beat stainless steel header and Y-pipe. Besides the fact that the RB presilencer won't do anything about the nauseating exhaust gas smell, this component is rather expensive considering its simplicity. My idea is to acquire an AP Universal catalytic converter from Summit Racing that is 14" overall, and has a 2.5" inlet and outlet. This cat sells for $73, Summit part # APH-602206. Next, obtain a 12" piece of 2.5" OD 16-gauge stainless steel straight exhaust pipe from Summit which runs for $19.00, part # STW-2-5HSS-1. I would then cut this in half with a tubing cutter, making two 6" pieces. Thirdly, I plan to purchase 2 stainless steel 2.5" exhaust flanges from Racing Beat, part #16173, and have the ends of each of the 6" pieces of stainless exhaust pipe welded to each of the exhaust flanges. Now, each of these pipe/flange units will need to be trimmed down so that when the ends of each pipe,(opposite of the end with the flange welded to it), are slipped into the inlet and outlet hubs of the catalytic converter, the overall length from flange to flange should not only not exceed 20", but there should be at least 1.5" between the weld bead of the flange/exhaust pipe joint, and the end of the hub of inlet or outlet of the catalytic converter. The reason for this is that I intend to use two 2.5" stainless steel lap-joint band clamps,(3" long overall), to secure the exhaust pipe to the inlet and outlet hubs of the catalytic converter. The lap-joint band clamps are sourced from Summit Racing, part # SUM-681250 for $11.99 each, and can be used permanently, or to secure the exhaust pipe/hub joint until they can be properly welded. Using two 2.5" RB exhaust flange gaskets,(which are supplied with the RB Y-pipe and RB header), the converter assembly can be lifted up and connected to the Y-pipe and header, (or RB downpipe), having the welded flange/pipe units slide or "telescope" out of the converter hubs to fit. Once these flanges are bolted to the Y-pipe and header,(or downpipe), the remaining exhaust pipe and converter hub joints can be secured with the lap-joint band clamps or welded directly.
I, of course, do not know how this unit will perform in terms of power gains, but is cheaper than the Bonez converter itself at $296,(if that price is still accurate on RX-7.com). Upon pricing this converter-type presilencer, All the parts come out to $182.71 before tax and the labor of having the RB stainless steel exhaust flanges welded to the 6" sections of stainless steel pipe. Compare this to Racing Beat's presilencer #16408 at $310.46. The system that I intend to install, with the Racing Beat Y-pipe, Racing Beat stainless steel header, additional gaskets, and my converter concoction, will come out to a grand total of $1092.17 before tax and welding labor. If this system used the Racing Beat presilencer, the total would come out to $1219.92 before tax, but with no welding labor, since it is all bolt-in. The Racing Beat presilencer will no doubt result in the greatest power gains, but I don't think the offensive exhaust odor is worth it on a street-driven RX-7.
Why would I do all that work? Well, it's all about price, price, price. I am looking at $182.71 versus $296 for this catalytic converter presilencer substitute. The only real hassle is having to take the 6" pieces of stainless 2.5" pipe to have them welded to the RB stainless flanges.
I really wanted a Bonez cat. The shop has been offline for a bit now.
If someone could point me to somewhere else that has them, it would be helpful.
Maybe the shop is back up and running now? Thanks
