Blown transmission? What's wrong?

My transmission went on me today while crusing I95. The situation is somewhat weird, though. I was driving along in 5th, and it makes a chunking noise and revs freely like it's in neutral. I drop it to fourth, and it's fine. While pulling off the highway, I'm at a stoplight when I discover that 4th gear is the ONLY gear that works.

Background: rebuilt clutch slave cylinder about 10k miles ago, original clutch/pressure plate, clutch slips slightly. Some trans bearing has been squeeking to hell over the past few days, now it isn't.

The car will only work in 4th gear. All the other gears free rev like neutral.

What's going on?

The input gear that drives the countershaft has stripped.

4th is the only gear that does not use the countershaft. It is straight through.

Usually you get some warning as the teeth start to go. It starts as a tick with each turn if the engine.

Check the FSM link in my sig below & look in the transmission section.
There are some good illustrations of what goes on inside.

If you're lucky, it's rebuildable.

If you need a tranny I have several available i can sell you cheap. This is sort of uncommon in that it went all at once, but I have seen it happen a few other times. The NA tranny is not very strong.

How much are you guys looking to get, including shipping? I'm in a serious x-mas money crunch right now, but I also need a running car.

I have some I can sell for $100, and shipping is whatever it is, probably $75 or so.

To the dude from hawaii, you should know better then trying to ship a transmission...that would cost several hundred dollars more than likely, far past the worth of the transmission itself. Find yourself a local rebuilder and hope they do a good job.

hypntyz7 I pmed you. Guys, I also need a transmission. I have a 91 automatic. Anyone have a working automatic transmission they can let me have? Looking at a budget of about 200-250 for tranny. Is that too little? Please let me know.

FWIW, you aren't going to find a good used auto tranny. Even the ones that "work properly" don't shift tightly at all and are generally sloppy. I have yet to see one last more than a year.

I would be happy to have it last a year. I am planning on doing a manual swap, but can't afford it right now. Just want to get the car up and running again.
