Blown Motor?
Blown Motor?
I was driving my rx7 pretty hard, wasnt hitting redlines, but all of a sudden I noticed a very choppy idle and when I came to a stop, my engine died. It turned on after I turned the ignition but died almost instantly. The car does not idle and will only stay running if I give it gas. My friend who was driving behind me noticed a lot of black smoke coming from my exhaust pipe. I am going to do a compression test tommorrow, but what do you guys think happened. I think that I either blew an oil seal or blew the engine.

goddamn it!!!!!!! i just bought a 10AE yesterday with brand new motor 47000 miles on the body and the same **** happened today looks like someones getting their money back.........ME!!!
Crank the idle up to see if it will idle, also check for vac leaks, will the car rev over 3800 rpm? Do you notice a strong vibration around 3k or so rpm, huge loss of power?
Is it skipping while you're giving it gas? also what does the smoke smell like? black smoke is usually an indication of a rich mixture. in which case suspect a driveability sensor, such as an oxygen or mass air flow sensor. i'm running into the same problem on the 13b n/a that i just rebuilt. it'll only run if i keep my foot on the gas. i have heard by alot of rx owners around here that the mass air flow sensor is finicky and will give you problems if it's not completely level. if the motor will still run then i doubt that it's toast.

Could be a number of things besides a blown engine...Bad spark plug, big vacuum leak, etc. Poor man's compression test is linked above.

do the poor man compression check in Aarons link.
If it starts, try and see if the engine will shake, or have a lumpy idle at 3-5k rpms.
Usually if the engine starts, the engine isnt blown.
Its probably the vac lines are poped off, or maybe something along the ignition, such as bad spark plugs, or one of the coil packs arent working (leading or trailing). But if the rpm gauge works I doubt its the trailing.

rjpbboi and Philly II I am looking for an engine... but Im looking for a turbo 2 blown is fine because I wanna rebuild it anyway... Philly II you say 13b so im assuming its not turbo but what about you rjpbboi is yours a turbo II? Please Pm me because I always seem to loose these posts when I reply!!! LOL
Mine did exactly the same thing when I forgot to put the vacuum line to the cruise control back on, my guess is a vacuum leak.
If the engine started normally I doubt that compression is an issue.
Seriously, I'll bet it is a vacuum leak.
(If you can get it to idle at all you can spray carb cleaner or ether around all the vacuum line and intake manifold components to determine where the leak is. Rev=Leak.)
You might also check the AFM (air flow meter) plug and if the hose to the BAC (Bypass air control) is still on.
