Blog: 91 coupe drift/time attack build up

Hi guys here is my new seven. A red 91 coupe with only 80k miles on the body. The motor has blown coolant seals but the motor in my blk car only has 6k or 7K miles on it. This car is an auto so I'm gonna do the five speed swap. It's pretty much gutted except for the front carpet, dash, door panels, and a passenger seat. The body is nice and straight though it just needs a paint job, but I got that covered. I plan on doing a cutsom wideboy. It's gonna be pretty mild, jus something to fit bigger rims inside there. Pretty much I'm bringing everything over from my 89 GTU to this 91 coupe. My GTU has fram damage from a drifting accident that happened in december. I can still beat on it and I still do. In fact I hid the damage pretty well. But I can't wait to get started on this thing. Here are some pics of it. This is only the beginning and I will record it's steps using this blog.

Thanks for checking it out. I should have all parts swapped over in a couple weeks. Right now I have the new motor.
-Tein springs
-Kyb shocks
-T2 steering rack w/washer for more steering angle
-88 GTU LSD

I plan on
-Coilovers
-Camber/caster plates
-Roll bar
-camber adjuster for rear
-racing seats
-some other lil goodies

What's up with how high the red one is sitting? That looks a lot higher than stock.

Pontiac Bonneville rims!!! haha got em at the junkyard for $15 a piece. The offest is a lil too positive for the front and spacers are needed.

I honestly don't know why it sits so damn high. It is gutted though which may have a part in that, and the rims in the back are 16 while the ones up front are 15. I'll fix all that though once I start fixing it up. First thing I'm gonna do is buff the paint out and pull the old motor.

Oh did I mention I got it for $300 and some kregen supplies from my friend.

Well, this morning I decided to buff out the paint some. I just use some turtle wax rubbing compound that I had, and it worked like a charm. The paint was started to fade and looked terrible, but with a lil buffing it all came out.

Sounds like a really cool project. I'll have to keep reading this thread. Sounds kinda similar to my project. Good luck with it and keep us posted.

Sweet deal. What are you going to do about the engine Alex? I'm guessing that you'll be calling Ben at Rotary Evolution for a rebuild or possibly a TII swap? I have a TII motor that I wouldn't mind selling. PM me if you are interested.

That photo a few posts up makes it look jacked up even more. I don't think 16" rims in the rear would be making it look that high. Something is a little funny there.

As for the motor right now I am keeping it NA because I will be daily driving it for awhile. I have a motor in the black car that only has about 7k miles on it, and it is great! It has been pretty good for drifting so far. So, I am going to stick with it until I feel I can't go any further with the NA. Then once I get better and better I will probly switch to a turbo motor so I can keep up with the big dogs. I'm still a rookie, but I'm getting the hang of it now. I figure if I become really good with this stock NA then I'll blow the doors off when I switch to turbo.

Yea I haven't figured it out, but the car is completely gutted except for the dash, pass. seat, and the motor/tranny is still there but not much is left. I've got the motor ready to pull now I jus need a cherry picker.

That is the most intelligent post I have read in over a year! As soon as I have enough stock you just won a free door vent pod from 5one5 Innovations.

Its quite an different feeling from n/a to turbo. I thought it was a million times easier in the n/a than the turbo. Throttle control has to be damn good. Back in the N/a I can mash and half way, nothing more!

YEA for 5one5 Innovations!!!! Yea I don't want to be one of those people who are good just cause the car is fast. As a DRIVER I want to be fast. I've been drifting and grip driving a lot lately making little runs on my way home and all I focus on is my technique. Probly about 5 times a week. I've pushed it faster and faster and all on BALD tires. My fronts are ok but losing grip and the rears are almost gone. *Dont worry I pick locations that are open and free from residents, I'm not dumb and I don't like street racing. But I feel a need to keep practicing.

Anyways I'm getting off topic. But yes I should be pulling the old motor this weekend once my friend brings over his cherry picker. I just need to make a mount for the tranny since this car was an auto. Then I will pull the motor out of the blk car and into the red car.

Thanks for looking guys. Please give me feedback on what you think and some ideas.

i'd say it's sitting high because of the weight reduction, must have lost a bunch of weight to sit that high

Yea this morning I tested the springs/struts. They are pretty stiff too. Stock but stiff so I think that's why.

I don't just drift. Read the title. I still drive/race this car although it's been wrecked already. And if you drift or just road race, YOU ARE GONNA CRASH. What's the point of having an Rx7 and you don't even drive it the way it should. Yes Rx7's aren't the best drift cars but I make it work. It's not a sports car if it just sits there. The driver has to take control and make it act like a sports car. If you are worried about Rx7's going extinct then go to the junkyard and rescue all the Rx7's out there that are put to waste because some guy/girl didn't know how to take care of a rotary. I know how to take care of my car, and yea I crashed from racing, but it's gonna happen one way or another. Sorry but I dislike it when people tell me things like this. My money, my car right? I don't care what you do with you car. So why do you care what I do with mine?

Just unplug the headlight motors. There should be a round white plug right behind the headlight assembly. I've had to ghetto rig my car once to leave the lights down cause only my highbeams would work, and if I let them stay up they'd blind everyone.
