Best performance & value tire?

Hey guys, I am shopping for some new high performance tires and wanted your thoughts on what you like as well! On my X-87 T2, I used & liked the Bridestone Potenza RE730's, But what else is a very good Z rated tire with good value? I now have a 88 T2. Can you go up in size? Stock is 205 55 16's...Can you go to a 215 or a 225 on a stock rim? I would like to get new rims eventually, but its not in the budget right now...So I would end up taking these tires off & on some light weight rims...Thoughts? Opinions? Thanks guys!

I use the Dunlop SP8000's in 225/50R16. They are about $91 each from discount tire. I have to use spacers up front for clearance. They fit fine in the back. Great tire. Good grip on street and on track. They are mounted on 16X7 Konig Rated Race wheels. They are also good, as they weigh 14.5-14.7lbs each and only cost $115 or so.

I use Proxes FZ4's and I love them. I'm running 225's up front without spacers and they don't rub and 245's in back (all on stock rims) and they don't rub either. They're expensive though and not a good value.

Yokohama AVS Intermediates are cheap and sticky
Pirelli P6000s are pretty good (they're Porsche OE)
Dunlop SP5000s are the best all-weather tire

I remembered another tire that amazed me. That was the Kumho Victaracer(sp?) That was an absolutely incredible tire. I saw an N/A with probably 75-100 hp less than my TII pull away from me on turns with identicle suspension components. I pushed harder for speed in the turn, but the rear would give out. He just kept on going! And they are DOT legal too. Kinda pricy though and with a wear rating of like 10 they aren't gonna last very long.

I can vouch for the P6000's, I have a set on the convertible. Words cannot describe how much I love these tires. Dry traction is excellent, wet is pretty good as well. They give excellent feedback and they're so smooth at the limit.

205/60 15's cost ~$70 each. I'm not sure about 16's but I bet it wouldn't be too much more.

A buddy of mine had a set of AVS Intermediates on his Neon and he liked them a lot. I almost went with a set of those but I figured I'd give the Pirelli's a shot since a 944 driving friend of mine liked them so much.

Sounds good guys! I read a great report on the Potenza RE 730's, they even track tested them vs many other high performance brands and it seemed to be much better in many differing aspects, I liked them before, so I will probaly go that way again, but thanks for the imput! So you can get 245's on the back with no problem? 225's up front? That would give it a more aggressive look for sure!
Thanks guys & happy motoring!

I have heard nothing but great things about the Kuhmo Ecsta 712's, the look good (tread pattern) and have one of the best wear ratings, oh and their cheap.

I'm running Yoko A520V -- what a damn good tire. Not too cheap, but amazing performance. I had Nitto before and I couldn't hold a corner like I can with the Yokos. Highly recommended.

My tires are in my sig. I absolutely love them. Someone told me that he didn't like them, and that they sucked...but from my experience they rule! I remember one time having to catch up to the SoCal7s guys, and the fc3s.org guys (Dave and Joe). I was about a 1/2 mile behind them, with another socal7s guy trailing behind me. I caught up about 3 min later after I jumped on it. The other guy was still trying to catch up, and finally did a little later.

I had Falken ZE502's on my FD, they SUCKED.

They were ok in the dry, liked to follow street-car tracks, but in the wet, OMG, hydroplaning everywhere..

I put Potenza 730's on there and so far they're a lot better on the FD.

On the FC, I put 730's also, but can't compare them against anything except the 940's that came on the car.

The Kumos are great tires but to get 245/50r16 on the back i had to remove the muffler shields. And 205/55r16 up front are as wide as I can go on my NA springs 215's rub the spring. Gotta get some coil overs to go wider up front.

The best value tire I've had is the Yokohama AVS series.
You can get them off tire rack for about $70 each.
Its old technology, the line was introduced over 10 years ago, but the way I figure it that means it fits the car aesthically speaking.
They don't last forever because they are soft, and when theyre new they will pick up gravel and even tar, spraying it all over your fenders (I have a white car and really notice these kinds of things), but they are excellent performers on dry roads, and the best rain tires I've ever had.
My '84 had some BF Goodwrench M&S tires. those were great. I got them for 50 cents on the dollar because the tire place bought out the inventory of another guy.
then I put some Kelly Chargers on it. hands down the crappiest tires I've every experienced.

One more vote for Yokohama AVS intermediate's. I love these tires! for the money you cant beat them. They stick like glue. I have had them for a year now. they have been through a few big burn outs and a good bit of drifting and still have lots of tread. About 80%. I will be putting a set of these on my T2 as soon as I get my rims.
