For a TII, a bonez midpipe (main cat has most back pressure) for $60 and cone filter/air breather for $30-40. Best bang for the buck + you can save you stock cat when you go for a sniff test. Jay

Yeah, the free ones lol.
Uhm, spark plugs and wires. Maybe an electric fan from a junkyard.
Change all of your fluids if the car is somewhat new. If its a turbo, get gauges. Boost and EGT (exhaust gas temp). They may be expensive but they're needed from beginning to end of your T2. If its N/A, uhm maybe work on your 5th and 6th ports. make them more aerodynamic, and if you're removing them I know mazdaspeed7 replaced them w/ shaved down pieces of nylon dowel rod to make it flow much easier. Throttle body mod. etc etc etc.
Maybe a soldering iron to fix all of the electric problems.
And if you don't have any problems w/ emissions (like living in a state that doesn't require them) you could gut your cats as midevil as it is.

Buy a mini die grinder and some bits, then port your intake manifold. Provinding you can have the car off the road for a weekend or so. Also you can buy a used header. CJ

You can make your own manual boost controler out of parts from the hardware store. I know its just two halves, a small metal ball, and a spring.

That "stage one" exhaust upgrade is pretty cheap isn't it..... or was that the "stage 1" intercooler upgrade?

Cut a large hole in the top of your air filter box, drop a K&N filter inside, and fabricate a cold air baffle out of soft foam to keep the engine heat out (duct it in from behind the headlight).

Sell your T2 because the n/a is so much more reliable. With all the money you saved, go out and buy a 3rd gen in a couple years. Then you can pretty much jump over one money pit, to fall into a bigger one. Thats what i did.

Actually my 3rd gen is pretty reliable. Its never left me on the side of the road, nor broken down. CJ

Put on a universal K/N cone air filter- 30 bucks or something, then
buy 70 dollars worth of performance stickers.

DO the ATF trick- recomended to ANYONE who hasn't done it in at least 2 years...or the H2O trick?!

Make some "speed holes" at random spots in the body.

for tubos you would just have a pipe made to exit at the passenger side in front ot eh rear tire. you don't need back pressure in a turbo.
so you take a 3' 3" pipe and have it empty about the middle of the passenger door. about $30 installed but NOT legal.

Yah, do that without any fuel system and boost control upgrades, and you will be looking for a new engine within a week. - Not good.

...like, a pop-off valve? But then won't be venting metered air out, and running mad rich?

No, it bleeds air out of the wastegate line, not metered air. Just like any other manual boost controller, just a lot less expensive. (And more sensitive).

Nice one. But make sure you use a pick ax. Need some speed groves like pontiacs, speed stickers like the ricers as well as speed dams and wings that have create no downforce improvement, only drag and are each held on with 2 plated steal screwes. (I realize the last 2 cost more than $100, but they don't usually look like it)
