Talking best mods on a 300$ budget (lol i know im poor)

i should be getting my emissions notice soon, and was wondering if anyone could help me out on what the cheapest most effective mods would be for my 1986 n/a rx-7

right now its completely stock and after it passes emissions i plan to start modding it, i've been thinking about getting a header and electric fan. then making my own custom exhaust and CAI this should bring me to my limit of about 300$

does anyone have any other comments, or better ideas of increasing power with just 300$ ?

Your not going to get far with 300 bucks. One of those items would take up the whole budget. The header/silencer combo is like 300 shipped I think. An E-fan is ~180 with the thermo and all the wiring. And the cheapest TRUE CAI is ours which is 180 bucks plus shipping. So yeah I don't think you will get to all of those goals with 300 smackers.

definately tires. Pick up some Z rated summer tires if you don't drive your car in the winter.

Yeah the exhaust will cost that much by itself.

I don't advise on the Efan unless you want a less effective cooling system. Unless you get a crazy shroud and insane CFM fan with a temp swithc then your wasting money.

BTW the Corksport single costs $300 by itself so just save and slowly build it the way you like it!

I did mine on a budget and got the ebay strut bar from Bomz and it's worked fine for me(like $45). The CS catback was also the cheapest and loudest(kind of a negative).
The CAI will be somewhat cheap if done by yourself but can be labor intesive.

I would recommend buying some struts maybe?and strut bar and ebay airfilter w/adapter.

Then tires, then Bonez superflo downpipe and catback.

hmm actually a rebuild would be pretty nice, my engine has 129k miles, even though it has been properly maintained im sure it has lost quite a bit of power, and a rebuild would definitly be a good idea at this point in its life to keep it running for the next few years :\

how much can i get a rebuild kit for, and from where?

go to a muffler shop and cut off your cats. It'll be like 50 bucks, and I swear I gained around 15 hp by doing it. You'll totally be able to notice a difference.

First of all Z rated tires aren't the highest rated speed tires....i believe Y tires are...(dont qoute me on the Y part) I was told by a Kumho tire salesman that the Z are rated at 148+ and the "Y" were 160+....

Beginning in 1991, the speed symbol denoting a fixed maximum speed capability of new tires must be shown only in the speed rating portion of the tire’s service description, such as 225/50R16 89S. The most common tire speed rating symbols, maximum speeds and typical applications are shown below:

N 87 mph 140 km/h Temporary Spare Tires
P 93 mph 150 km/h
Q 99 mph 160 km/h Studless & Studdable Winter Tires
R 106 mph 170 km/h H.D. Light Truck Tires
S 112 mph 180 km/h Family Sedans & Vans
T 118 mph 190 km/h Family Sedans & Vans
U 124 mph 200 km/h
H 130 mph 210 km/h Sport Sedans & Coupes
V 149 mph 240 km/h Sport Sedans, Coupes & Sports Cars

When Z-speed rated tires were first introduced, they were thought to reflect the highest tire speed rating that would ever be required, in excess of 240 km/h or 149 mph. While Z-speed rated tires are capable of speeds in excess of 149 mph, how far above 149 mph was not identified. That ultimately caused the automotive industry to add W- and Y-speed ratings to identify the tires that meet the needs of new vehicles that have extremely high top-speed capabilities.

W 168 mph 270 km/h Exotic Sports Cars
Y 186 mph 300 km/h Exotic Sports Cars

While a Z-speed rating still often appears in the tire size designation of these tires, such as 225/50ZR16 91W, the Z in the size signifies a maximum speed capability in excess of 149 mph, 240 km/h; the W in the service description indicates the tire’s 168 mph, 270 km/h maximum speed.

quoted from tire rack. Yes Z rated isn't exactly the highest because it allows anything above V rated to be Z rated whether its Y or W rated or not inturn being massivly misleading. But again he will not see 149 mph any time soon. I have hit 135 and it wasn't pulling hard at all so I would say that is within the spec.

well, as usual. Make your own stuff!!!

The CAI can be done relatively cheap.

Swipe an old fiero fan and throw that on.

Perhaps a header....but its always a good idea to have some cash saved up just in case the engine does go.

Yes i know.....I would like to thank you on the info too becuz this will help me out when i go buy tires....of course i wont need z rated or anything that high cuz most likely i will only hit about 125........thx again and yes i think Z rated tires would be good for him

you could grab your fan from jegs. It'll run you $125.99 plus shipping. It comes with a thermostat, and produces up to 2800cfm.

Headers, will run you about 170 plus shipping from Victoria-British.

Which would put you over your $300 with shipping.

IMO the stock clutch fan is fine, unless you are cleaning up your engine bay.

Santiago please explain to me why pacesetter headers are shitty? Im just curious to know what you think.

Dont spend your money on an E-fan, their is almost no gain from doing this, except for a cleaner engine bay. For $300 you could get a pacesetter header, some strut tower braces, and a customized cold air intake. Those mods would make a noticable difference on performance. But if you plan on extensively modding it you might want to consider doing other things.

If you had more money I would go with the idea of better tires. Stickier rubber can make you car easier to control, which is always a good thing. But I cant think of any nice performing tire that you can get 4 of installed for $300, thats not happening.

I beleive I saw one pace setter header a while back. It was only as long as the stock manifold. I thought the point was to have long primary runners to allow for less backpressure. I also remember hearing all over that they will rust in a couple of hears and the quality is not very good. I ahve not personal experience but i have seen some pics of rusted ones on the net. Perhaps they changed from when i saw and read all that info but I don't know of it. And who have you hear talk badly about RB? they make good stuff that won't fall apart.

I've had the Pace Setter header. It does provide noticably more power than stock but they are not even length headers and therefore will not provide as much of a gain as a good equal length header. For about the same price the good old Racing Beat header can be had fairly cheaply here:

http://66.216.67.51/product.asp?0=210&1=256&3=375

After shipping that still leaves you with about $100 or so to put into your car. You can make your own straight pipe to replace the cat for about $20 and have it welded together by a muffler shop. Just cut the pipe yourself and go to them for flanges and welding. This will still leave you with enough money left over to go to Autozone to buy a cone filter for $20. They also sell the adapters for the afm as well but you'll have to modify them for smooth airflow. That in total should be about $300.

the higher the rating means the tire is made better. and generaly the higher the rating the better the tire...

so weither you are going 200 or 50. the Z tire is better....

E-bay is a good place.
get an MAF adaptor+ Filter for 9 plus 13 ship
get a strut bar for 10+13 ship
get custom piping from a muffler shop to make a single pipe for the rest of the money.
